New student move-in is one of the happiest days of the school year for us. It’s a day where we welcome hundreds of new students and their families who are at the beginning of the adventure that is college (or college parenting).

The second wave of our ’30s and transfer students will move in tomorrow, and then the new students will largely go in one direction for student Orientation and families will be on their own specific track. Read more…

Orientation schedule for new families and P’30 message

While we have a robust Family Orientation schedule with lots of smaller group events, we have a couple of ‘all call’ large experiences for families (full disclosure, I am going to all of these and hope to meet as many of our new families as I can):

  • Tuesday 8/18 at 5:30 p.m. in Wait Chapel: Flourish in the Forest with senior administrators and representatives from both academics and campus life. We know folks will have been moving in/running to Target, etc. all day, so feel free to come as you are (not just to this session, but all of them!)
  • Immediately following Flourish in the Forest will be New Deacs on the Block – kind of a block party on the Quad. This is one event where new students will join their families after their required hall meetings.
  • Wednesday 8/19 at 9 a.m. in Wait Chapel: What to Know Before You Go, which shares info we want all families to know, and helps preview the rest of the days sessions, so you can make intentional choices about where you spend your time
  • Wednesday from 5:15-6:30 p.m. is the President’s Reception in Farrell Hall (big building behind Wait Chapel and near the big parking lot). This is a time to say hello to President Rodriguez as well as the many administrators and staff members who will be in attendance.

Finally, every Monday of the fall semester, we share a message for new families about something their student might be experiencing (or will soon experience) and how their loved ones can help support them. Today’s message is Setting the Stage for Autonomy and Wellbeing. While I will share these each Monday in the Daily Deac, you can also see the archive if you miss any.

Weather forecast for move-in

If you are moving in a new student, tomorrow’s forecast looks hot, but not rainy. For those bringing sophomores-seniors on Friday-Saturday, there is more of a chance of rain:

Weather forecast August 18-22, 2026

Weather forecasts can change a lot within a short time, so if you are a Friday-Saturday move, keep checking back (and let’s hope the rain might stay away).

Video showing how easy it is for students to get their textbooks at our University Bookstore

If your Deacs have not yet ordered their textbooks and course materials for fall classes, they can do so at the University Bookstore on the Quad in Taylor Hall. This Instagram post shows how easy it is!

And it’s worth it for our students (and families) to follow the University Stores Instagram account: you can find out when there are special promotions and more!

Lacy February (’27) URECA Scholar photostory on wasp research

I shared a post last week about URECA research by Leyla Herrera; today I have another to share: this time is is Lacy February (’27) and she is doing research on facial recognition in wasps with Biology professor Christopher Jernigan.

URECA stands for The Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities Center. The goal of the center is to promote and celebrate mentored scholarship: “Undergraduate research has been a longtime cornerstone of the College’s commitment to academic excellence. Our goal is to provide undergraduate students that opportunity to engage in mentored or independent scholarship.”

Watch the video and/or you can see the photostory.

I will be heavily involved on move-in day for new students tomorrow as well as Family Orientation through Wednesday, but will do what I can for the Daily Deac.

Wishing everyone safe travels and an easy move in!
