Today is FDOC (the First Day of Classes) – so lots of excitement, anticipation, and all the feelings that come from starting a new semester. Students will be going through the syllabus for each of their classes and trying to work out their study schedule, when they’ll hang out with friends, and more. Over the next several weeks, that will all start to fall into place.
I am still catching up from parent and family Orientation, so here goes.
Campus safety advisory
There was a campus safety advisory issued lastnight; see it at Wake Alert. The message also outlines resources for students and personal safety and security precautions.
If you have downloaded the WakeSafe app and enabled notifications, you should have also gotten this message; see instructions here.
I do not have any further information about this (I received the same message your students/you did).
FDOC message from President Rodriguez

Face to Face tickets for Cynthia Erivo (Sept. 16)
I saw a post by Face to Face, our speaker series, about upcoming evnets, including Wicked’s Cynthia Erivo. Students may want to take note of how to get their ticket:
“Upper level tickets are FREE for Wake Forest University students. Students may claim tickets individually or school administrators and staff may arrange a group outing for classes, clubs, students organizations, etc. For instructions on how to claim your free ticket or RSVP your group, visit this webpage.“
Neuroscience programs
I stumbled on this post from WFU Neuroscience on Instagram, which is about their neuroscience programs:
“Neuroscience at Wake Forest brings together biology, psychology, and the humanities to explore how the brain shapes behavior, thought, and experience. Students gain a strong scientific foundation while engaging with the ethical, social, and human dimensions of brain science.”
There is both a BA and BS, as well as a 5 year MS in Neuroscience.
Checklist of processes sophomores-seniors will do each year
We had gotten a request from a family of an upperclass student (i.e., sophomores-seniors) who asked for a checklist of action items; since families and students got used to having a checklist their first year, they wanted one to help them for the rest of the time at Wake.
This was crowdsourced with input from many campus offices. Hope this is helpful.
Required Items
Academic
- Have required academic advising sessions with your assigned academic advisor/major advisor each semester
- Register for Fall or Spring Courses (refer to your Registration Appointment in Workday to see your time)
- Buy/rent your textbooks and course materials (recommended to use the University Bookstore) before the first day of class
- Declare a major (typically in spring of sophomore year)*
Financial
- Complete the tuition payment for the Fall and Spring terms: see payment methods and due dates. For the Fall term, the bill will be released on 7/2 and due on 8/1, and, for the Spring, the bill will be released on 11/2 and due on 12/1.
- Enroll in or decline the GradGuard Tuition Insurance offer. Tuition insurance guarantees up to a 100% refund for your student’s semester charges in case of withdrawal. You can learn more about the tuition insurance coverage here.
- Log into Workday (typically before the start of each semester and before class registration) to:
- Check for any Inbox tasks, including onboarding, and complete them
- Check the Student Financials page (View Profile > Student Financials) and resolve any past-due balances/holds
- Check for any registration holds in Workday (View Profile > Action Items and Holds)
Health
- Complete the Student Health Insurance enrollment/waiver form (required annually each summer, not just the first year)
- Log into the Deacon Health Portal to see if you have any messages or need to update your immunizations
Housing and Dining
- Ensure you have your housing and meal plan finalized for the upcoming year. This may include selecting a room, signing your agreements, indicating an on/off-campus intent, etc. Students should review all messages from Residence Life and Housing carefully to understand the particulars of their circumstances.
Safety
- Ensure you have registered your mobile phone with Wake Alert (before the start of the semester)*
- Ensure you have downloaded Alertus (a tool that allows University Police to send a pop-up, full-screen laptop warning when immediate safety actions are needed) before the start of the semester *
Strongly Recommended Items
Financial
- Add Authorized Payers (Third-Party Access) in Workday: Ensure appropriate permissions are selected for all third-party access (e.g., so your family can pay tuition, etc.).*
- Sign up for Direct Deposit with Student Financial Services: This will provide students with a convenient and secure way to access their funds faster, where applicable.*
Housing
- Protect your student’s belongings with renter’s insurance (strongly recommended; either through your own policy or via Grad Guard) before the first day of the semester
Safety
- Download, enable notifications and use the WakeSafe app*
Optional/if applicable items
Academic
- Submit a disability-related academic accommodations request with supporting documentation
Financial
- Enroll in optional GradGuard tuition insurance plan; must be done before the first day of class
Housing and Dining
- Submit a disability-related housing and dining accommodation request with supporting documentation
- Sophomores and Juniors can explore our new Affiliate Housing provider, Creekside at The Grounds, by visiting our on-campus leasing office in the Wellbeing Center, Room B252.
Transportation
- Register for a parking permit (if bringing a car to campus)
* – these processes only have to be done once
