I’m calling today ‘Thrilling Thursday’ because of how gorgeous it is on campus today. It’s about 77 and sunny with a light breeze: a great day to be outdoors. Campus seems to get prettier by the day, and I am grateful to an alumna who enjoys the campus tulips as much as I do, because she kindly shared these shots of the front gates that I was unable to get on my commute:

Today was a meeting-packed day for me so we’ll get right to it!

Amazing research application – color changing plastic

Our faculty do a ton of incredible, innovative research, but I have to admit this one is blowing my mind:

“Imagine putting a bandage on a wound. As your wound heals, the bandage is white, but if it becomes infected, the bandage alerts you by turning deep blue. Infrared light then heats the wound, killing off bacteria and turning the bandage white again once the infection is gone.

This type of technology may be possible in the future thanks to the work of Wake Forest University Assistant Professor of Chemistry Cedric Schaack and his team, who are creating the scientific building blocks for this type of discovery.”

Reminder about upcoming fall course registration for current students (not incoming ’30s)

This was in the WFU Should Know student e-newsletter that goes out every Thursday, and thought it might be of interest:

Registration for continuing undergraduate students will run from March 31-April 3. The Fall 2026 schedule has been published, and registration appointments are now available in Workday. Reserved seats will be released the morning of April 9, so be sure to understand how automatic waitlists work. Refer to the March 13 email sent by the Office of the University Registrar for additional details.”

I can’t stress enough the importance of students reading that March 13 email and being sure they understand the waitlist process.

Walk with Wente: José Luis Venegas

In our ongoing series with President Wente talking to our faculty about their research, teaching, and engagement with our students, this week she talks with Professor of Spanish José Luis Venegas. They talk about how history inhabits the present, who gets to tell stories, what those stories mean and who gets left out. He encourages students to look at the big questions and think about those questions across cultures and languages. Watch their conversation.

Wakeville Arts Festival photostory

The student-led Wakeville Arts Festival took place last Saturday. It included musical performances, singing, dancing, acting, art (both traditional and digital), WakerSpace, and more. You can see the photostory here. Looks like a wonderful way to spend part of a beautiful spring Saturday.

Care Package order reminder

If you had been debating about ordering a finals week care package via Residence Life and Housing, they shared this reminder:

“Support your student during finals week with a care package they’ll appreciate. Comforting snacks and your words of encouragement can make all the difference during long study nights. The deadline to order is April 1. Click here to learn more.”

That does it for today, Daily Deacdom. Have a great night, and happy almost-weekend to you!
