Snow in the Forecast?
In this Issue:
- Maybe a big snow this weekend?
- Hit the Bricks leadership application
- Face to Face Speaker Forum student-led event on Thursday, Feb. 26
It’s a short week this week, following yesterday’s day off for the MLK Holiday. President Wente shared this reflection with the campus community.
It’s also starting out to be a frigid week. I was at a 9 am meeting and the walk from my car to Benson was extremely cold. I hope our students are bundling up this week. And on that note…
Maybe a big snow this weekend?
If you have not seen this weekend’s forecast, it looks like 1) it will snow, and 2) there could be a LOT of snow. Here is the forecast for Saturday and Sunday, at least as of this morning. Click to enlarge.
Obviously the forecast can change between now and this weekend (and I hope it does!) but it would be smart for students to prepare now. “Prepare” may look different depending on your student’s individual situation, but some of the basics might be ensuring that you have enough food and drink on hand for your needs, enough prescription medicine, gas in your car, etc. For those who live off campus, a snow shovel would be a good investment.
While Winston-Salem has the ability to brine streets before storms (to discourage ice build up), we do not have the number of plows that place like Phili or Boston, or New York or Chicago, etc. have. Normally the major roads get plowed first, the side roads later, neighborhoods typically not at all. And at least in my neighborhood, anyone who drives on a lot of snow packs it down and it melts a bit in the sun and then refreezes at night, making driving potentially hazardous.
All that to say that students should be thinking about their needs now and making plans to prep what they need, and not wait until Friday to do it. There is normally a run on milk, bread, and toilet paper here, as seen in this meme:
Hit the Bricks leadership application
The Hit the Bricks team has asked me to share this application for students to apply for HTB leadership positions. Those positions include:
- Internal Relations
- External Relations
- Entertainment
- Graphic Design
- Media
- Fundraising
- Corporate Sponsorship
Students can learn more about these positions here. The application deadline is Friday, Feb. 6. If selected to participate, interviews will occur 1-2 weeks before Spring Break.
Face to Face Speaker Forum student-led event on Thursday, Feb. 26
I got an email from Face to Face about the Feb. 26 student event with Lieutenant General H.R. McMaster. It read, in part:
“The Face to Face Speaker Forum student-led event [will be] on Thursday, February 26. This event is made for students by students, and is moderated by current Wake Forest undergraduates. Hosted at Wait Chapel on campus, the event runs from 5:00 p.m. to 5:50 p.m., with doors opening at 4:30 p.m. Arrive early to avoid lines and pass through security. Backpacks and outside food/drink are not allowed.
Tickets are FREE for Wake Forest students.”
Students can request their ticket here (WFU login may be required). These student-led events are always so terrific, and this could be the only time in your students’ lives where they can hear the types of candid responses to student questions that always come in the student event. I hope your Deacs will sign up to attend.
That’s all I have for you today, Daily Deacdom. Stay safe and warm!
