Today I am sharing a few things about Family Weekend that I thought y’all might appreciate. Let’s head right to it…
Family Weekend schedule has been updated in Guidebook
I hope that as many Deac families as possible will attend Family Weekend. Throughout the early fall, the Family Weekend committee has been finalizing events, and there are some additional ones that you might not have seen when you originally registered. There are a variety of open houses for academic and other departments, tours of Reynolda House Museum of American Art, Scholars in Capitalism pizza dinner, and more.
I’d encourage everyone to download the Guidebook app for Family Weekend and check out the schedule. Here’s a quick graphic on how you can see the various events (click to enlarge). You can click on the name of any individual event to see more information; clicking on the plus sign adds it to your schedule.
Kickoff set for Family Weekend – 12 noon
In case you missed it, kick off time for WFU vs. GA Tech has been set for 12 noon on Saturday, Sept. 27. This page at GoDeacs.com will guide you for all things related to Game Day!
Parking for Family Weekend
On Friday, families can park in visitor and general lots as noted on the Reynolda Campus Parking Map. After 5 p.m. Friday and on Saturdays and Sundays, most campus lots are available for families (as the majority of staff and faculty will not be on campus).
If you are going to Saturday’s football game, parking on gameday at the football stadium is $40. There will also be free shuttles to/from campus leaving from Lot P behind Wait Chapel; shuttles start four hours prior to kickoff (and kickoff is noon). If you choose to use a rideshare option, request to be dropped off on Shorefair Drive behind the Tennis Center for the tailgate.
URECA (Undergraduate Research Day)
One of the things that really distinguishes Wake Forest is that our undergraduate students can get involved with research projects with faculty. This is not the norm in higher ed. At many universities, faculty and researchers may work primarily with their own Masters and Ph.D. students, not undergrads. But here, undergrads are really welcomed into collaborations with faculty. And some of these undergrads are doing exceptional research.
You can see the fruits of their labor at Family Weekend: undergraduate research will be highlighted during URECA Day: Friday, September 26, from 3-5 p.m. at the Sutton Center. Students from across the arts and sciences will showcase their incredible research and creative projects through dynamic poster presentations and engaging talks.
If you are not familiar with academic research – or if you are and are a fan! – please consider coming out to discover the research happening right here on campus and be to part of this celebration of student scholarship and academic excellence. You will likely be amazed at what your Deac and/or their peers are doing. It is pretty remarkable to see how smart our students are – and as a parent or family member, you may take a special kind of pride in seeing that.
Consider inviting solo students to your Family Weekend outings
Family Weekend is a ton of fun – and – not every student’s family is able to attend. And that can make students feel lonely, or extra homesick when they see others with their loved ones.
So if your Deac has hallmates, friends, etc. whose families cannot attend Family Weekend, please consider inviting them to join you. It would be such a lovely gesture to make another space at your table or let them go to the game with you, etc. So if you have the ability, I hope you might consider that.
