On a day that should be filled with joy – new student move-in – our hearts are heavy. You have likely seen the terrible news of the explosion of the Given Coffee truck, which was present at Joel Coliseum as part of our move-in day welcome for ‘29 and P’29 families.
Please join me in offering your thoughts and prayers to the four employees of the Given Coffee truck who were injured. I got coffee from them not once but twice on Saturday when I helped at Pre-Orientation move-in, and the coffee team could not have been nicer.
Because the explosion happened as new students and their families were waiting to check in at the coliseum, there may be members of our community who need extra support right now. We encourage any impacted students or families to call 336-758-CARE (2273) or submit a referral at we.wfu.edu. If your student needs help or support, please remind them that self-care is smart and asking for help is a good thing.
While this is not the start to school that anyone wished for, rest assured that we still will have our full slate of Orientation activities for ‘29s and P’29s:
Our first big Orientation session for families is Flourish in the Forest, which starts at 5:30 p.m. tonight in Wait Chapel (your ‘29s will be at their Living at Wake required meeting at the same time). At 6:00 p.m., transfer students will gather in the Green Room in Reynolda Hall for “Rooted in the Forest.” Immediately following the student and family programs, both students and families are invited to come together for New Deacs on the Block (food, fun, and community) on the Quad (Hearn Plaza, right outside Wait Chapel).
