I held the Daily Deac today for a late addition: a message that went to campus around 5:20 p.m.

Responding to Acts of Vandalism and Hate Speech

A message about vandalism and hate speech was just sent to campus. Here is an excerpt:

“Overnight, individuals vandalized sidewalks and a tree on the Reynolda Campus using spray paint. This criminal act also violates the student code of conduct. One incident of this vandalism included the use of vile, antisemitic language. The University has also received reports of racist, anti-Black, antisemitic, Islamophobic, and homophobic speech. Expressions of hatred directed toward an individual or group are completely antithetical to our values, and are abhorrent and unacceptable.

The Wake Forest University Police Department is actively investigating these incidents. If you have information, please call 336-758-5591 or use the Silent Witness reporting tool to remain anonymous.”

Read the full message here. This is just hitting my inbox; I don’t have any more details than what is in the message.

New FAQ published this morning re: student demonstration

Yesterday I shared a message that had been sent to students, faculty, and staff about the student demonstrations. A Frequently Asked Questions section was been added this morning. You can read it here (scroll down past the main message to get to the FAQ).

Call Center (336-758-7500) 8 a.m.-8 p.m. today and Friday 5/3

Related to the previous item, because folks have had questions about the student demonstrations, Wake Forest has established a call center for students, faculty and staff. The number to call is 336-758-7500, and today and tomorrow we will be open from 8 a.m.-8 p.m.

Must note that the call center does not have any information that has not been shared publicly. However, they can help clarify important points and address your questions.

Ed Wilson memorial service tomorrow at 11 a.m.

For the alumni families in the Daily Deacdom, wanted to remind that Wake Forest will host a memorial service for longtime Professor of English and Provost Emeritus Ed Wilson (‘43) tomorrow (Friday, May 3), in Wait Chapel at 11 a.m. Doors to Wait Chapel will open at 10 a.m. and seating may be limited. Overflow seating will be available in Brendle Recital Hall, and the event will be livestreamed

Guests attending the service are invited to a BBQ picnic on Hearn Plaza after the service. To provide space for visitors attending the service, please note: Parking Lots A and P on either side of Wait Chapel will be closed from 7:30 a.m. until the service ends, and Davis Field will be closed to faculty and staff. Shuttle service from 2400 Reynolda Road to the Reynolda Campus shuttle hub will run continuously from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Library Decorating Committee reveal

Longtime Daily Deac-ers may recall that there is a secret Library Decorating Committee. It is an anonymous group of students who decorate ZSR twice each year, right before fall and spring final exams begin.  You can see the Flickr gallery of this spring’s photos here.

A while back, I spoke to one of my ZSR sources to ask about this secret committee. Here’s what they told me:

“We love that there are students at Wake Forest that so love the library and desire to honor beloved administrators that they take time out of their VERY BUSY end-of-semester schedules to bring [these decorations] to everyone. It is quite a testament to the university leadership that they are given this ‘shout out,’ and we are so pleased that they utilize the library atrium for the installation.

We think this is another example of how much ZSR partners with students every day, including providing a space for this artistic expression! We are never clued into what will be installed, trusting the Library Decorating Committee implicitly to come up with the design. (Not knowing is part of the excitement!)  I hope this tradition never ends!”

Letters So Dear to seniors

As we wrap up the semester, we’re excited to share a special edition of the Letters So Dear to our senior class.

For the last 7 years, the Office of Orientation, New Student, and Transition Programs has sent weekly Letters So Dear to our new / transfer students for their entire first year.

On May 1st, they were thrilled to collaborate with colleagues in the Office of Personal and Career Development to share this senior reflection and important Commencement details. Read the Letters So Dear to seniors.

Final Exams begin tomorrow

Today is Reading Day (i.e., a study day) and tomorrow the real thing begins: final exams. If your Deacs need a place to study, Wake Study Space shows the options.

We wish all our Deacs a strong showing on their finals!
