Thank goodness we finally got past the 6,825 days in January – or at least that’s what it felt like to me! February is here, which means we are inching ever closer to spring, which means flowers, more sun, warmer temps. I can’t wait!

Summer study opportunity in Barcelona

A very high percentage of our students study abroad, but a full semester away is not necessarily the answer for every student. Fortunately, there are a number of amazing shorter-term programs, including this newly-announced one in Barcelona, Neuroscience and Dance, this summer.

My friend and colleague Christina Soriano of the department of Theatre and Dance (who is co-teaching the course) told me the following:

“We will be studying the ways the arts have an impact on our brain and body health, visiting labs in Spain that study these changes, and taking in the visual and performing arts environments in Barcelona. It’s going to be a blast!

No previous movement or neuroscience background is necessary. Spanish language background is also not needed.

The course is co-taught by me and my neuroscience collaborator at the Sticht Center for Healthy Aging and Alzheimer’s Prevention, Dr. Christina Hugenschmidt.
Interested students who take this course may also have future opportunities to work with us on our NIH-funded research.”

Wake Forest Fund premium gift time

My best Wake girlfriends and I have a running group text. Early this morning, I got one that said (in essence) ‘Darn you, Wake. I donated immediately to get this piece of drinking finery‘ and it had a picture of one of our February premium gifts:

'A Glass of the Finest' pintglass, part of our Feb. 2024 Wake Forest Fund gifts for a $25 donation to the WF Fund

She got the message because it went out to alumni of Wake, but you may also have gotten a message today as current or past parents and families? There are three premium items this year – the pintglass, a tea towel, and a workout towel. If you make a new $25 or more gift to the Wake Forest Fund, one of these can be yours while supplies last. You’ll have to see the website for all the fine print and details, but in case you wanted to grab one of these gems, act quickly. I myself am getting the tea towel 🙂

A song for our P’27s (and maybe everyone else too)

I got an email from a Daily Deac reader who is a P’27. They told me their ’27 sent them a link to this song “Two Days Into College” and said this is really relatable content and matched the vibes of campus. I had not heard the song before but I absolutely loved it. As a mom of a ’27 at another school, this definitely rings true – and I suspect it might ring just as true to our older families too. Anyway, I hope you enjoy it.
