Which college team name was a question on Jeopardy last night? If your answer is “Who are the Demon Deacons?” you’d be right!

Jeopardy question 1/29/24 "It's the somewhat Devilish name for the sports teams at NC's Wake Forest University"

Here’s your news for the day.

P’24s: Last call for Howler Senior Portraits!

Attention P’24s! I got an email this week from the editor of The Howler, our student yearbook. They have put out the final call to seniors to get their senior portraits: February 5th through 9th will be the last days for portraits. They will be in the Howler office, Benson 500. Students can sign up here

Senior families, be sure to check with your student on getting their portrait made if this is important to them.

Hazing Prevention Week

Hazing Prevention Week began yesterday and runs through Friday, Feb. 2. Events include: educational workshops (1/31 and 2/1) and training sessions; a Student Government-led forum to examine and provide feedback on the University’s current hazing policy; students can also sign a pledge against hazing.

The featured program is Hazing Prevention – A Community-Wide Conversation on Wednesday, Jan. 31 from 5-6 p.m. in Pugh Auditorium in the Benson Student Center. Encourage your students to participate.

AZAD (the rabbit and the wolf) multimedia experience Feb. 1

There is a new multimedia theatrical experience coming up this week: AZAD (the rabbit and the wolf). It was written by alumna Sona Tatoyan (’00), in collaboration with Jared Mezzocchi. Your Deacs can see this on Feb. 1 at 7:30 p.m. on the Tedford Stage, Scales Fine Arts Center. This is the description:

Those who tell the stories hold the power in this kaleidoscopic, multi-media story-within-a-story-within-a-story blending Armenian and Arabic folklore with Karagöz shadow puppetry. This isn’t a play, but instead a mosaic of centuries old mythic archetypes found not only within ourselves but in the pain and metamorphic magic that we pass on from generation to generation.”

This looks really interesting, and promises to be a performance unlike many others. Hope your Deacs will go if their schedules permit.

aWake All Night (Game Show edition) Feb. 2

It’s almost time for one of my favorite spring events: aWake All Night: “Join us for our biannual aWake All Night for various games, activities, and good food! Look forward to things like gift basket giveaways, glow laser tag, and much more!!!”

This will be on Friday, Feb. 2 from 8 p.m. to midnight in the Benson Center and is a great opportunity for all our students to have fun together and experience a Game Show atmosphere.

Safety reminders

There have been a couple of safety reminders circulated to students in the past weeks: one is on e-scooter and e-bike safety, one on scaffolding that will be in place at the Miller Center, and one on pedestrian safety.
