  • P’24s: a new round of senior portraits for The Howler yearbook

Today is a busy day on campus – it’s Pitsgiving all day, plus Dr. Wente’s presidential address this afternoon (and I have many meetings inbetween). So today will be quite brief.

Pitsgiving is today!

Today is one of my favorite days of the year – Pitsgiving, our annual pre-Thanksgiving feast. Our amazing partners in Deacon Dining make turkey, ham, stuffing, gravy, pumpkin pie and all the fixins, and our students “gobble til you wobble” as one of the past Pitsgiving graphics said.

Pitsgiving is all about strategy: how do I get a table for me and my friends? And that is where the fine art of the “Pit Sit” comes in. A Pit Sit is when you go to the Pit and enter on a meal swipe, and then hang there until the next meal begins. Today when I got to the Pit around 10:30, there were many a Pit Sitter already there holding tables from breakfast.

I had the distinct pleasure of getting to know a first-year student who won a reserved table for 8 at Pitsgiving via a lottery that was in our student e-newsletter, WFU Should Know. Her name was drawn at random from 901 entries (hint to your students: always read WFU Should Know because you never know what you might benefit from!) Our lucky first-year and 7 of her friends not only got a reserved table, but got to go first in the Pitsgiving food line and snagged a bunch of swag too, including the much coveted I [heart] the Pit tshirts and some custom tumblers. These young women were delighted to be there and delightful to work with. Happy first Pitsgiving.
