It was a glorious weekend here in Winston-Salem, friends: upper 60s, sunny, absolutely delightful to be outdoors. This week looks like it will be pretty darn good too. Having a bit of cooler weather is a treat, particularly when you consider the satirical 12 Seasons of NC weather 😉

With the passing of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, wanted to share that she had been a friend to Wake Forest and particularly our School of Law, having done a number of programs with us. You can read more about her 2005 visit sponsored by the Law School, her 2012 lecture in Vienna, or her 2016 Merchant of Venice experience in Italy. Here are a couple of pictures from her 2005 visit. I went to that lecture and remember being wowed by her intellect, and that she was much more diminutive in stature than I had realized.

In other civic engagement news, tomorrow (Tuesday, September 22) is National Voter Registration day. There will be an opportunity from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Davis Field Tent to join the Office of Civic & Community Engagement, Deacs Decide and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity to become a registered voter in NC or learn more about absentee voting. They will review important dates and deadlines heading into the election. National Voter Registration Day is a non-partisan national holiday that seeks to create broad awareness of voter registration opportunities and ways to get out the vote! Your Deacs can stop by or Register to attend on The Link.

On the COVID front, the dashboard has been updated, and it is good to see a lower number of new cases these past few days. Thank your students for their diligent mask wearing, social distancing, and avoidance of known risks! I have been asked to clear up a misconception that we have been hearing from students: if your students were part of random testing here on campus, or if the Student Health Service has tested them, we already have those results and they do not need to send them in to Student Health Service. We only need students to report a positive test result if they had gotten a COVID test done off campus. Read more at our Health of Community page.

Since it is Monday, our ’24s got their issue of Letters So Dear. And for our P’24 families, we have your Weekly Message for First-Year Families; this one is about navigating the classroom and professors.

Make it a great week, Deac families!
