Important Reminders
In this Issue:
- Family Weekend event registration opens at 10 a.m. tomorrow (July 15)
- Thoughts on ’30 and transfer student course registration
Today we share info on two important processes: getting your Family Weekend event tickets, and course registration for our incoming ’30 students, which starts July 22nd. Let’s get right to it!
Family Weekend event registration opens at 10 a.m. tomorrow (July 15)
Hopefully this is already on your radar screens, but this is a final reminder that Family Weekend event registration will open on July 15th – tomorrow – at 10 a.m.
Weekend highlights will include exploring campus on Friday and enjoying the Night of Student Entertainment; going to the student tailgate and the big game against Stanford at Allegacy Stadium on Saturday; enjoying Farewell Brunch on Sunday, and much more!
So if you need event tickets, log on tomorrow at 10 a.m. Tickets for the Family Weekend game are available now at godeacs.com.
Thoughts on ’30 and transfer student course registration
The rest of today’s Daily Deac is geared towards the incoming parents and families of the Class of 2030 and transfer families. Your incoming students will begin the process of registering for classes on July 22. Before that process begins, I want to share some advice and perspective from the Offices of the University Registrar and Academic Advising.
- Registration is an ongoing process. ‘30 students/transfer students should not expect to have their entire class schedule settled on July 22. (If that happens for your Deac, great! But that is not typically the norm).
- If something your ‘30/transfer student wants isn’t available right away, they should keep checking back in Workday: a student may have signed up for a class on July 22 and three days later decides they don’t want that seat and drops the class.
- Departments will be monitoring demand for their classes and they could make adjustments by adding seats and/or new sections. There may also be reserved seats that get released, so availability will continue to change.
- Students should consider the full array of course meeting times (yes, even 8 a.m. classes!) and all available faculty in order to maximize their schedules, and be willing to adjust their plan. Any credit bearing class a student takes advances them towards their degree, even if it is not their first choice, or in their intended major, etc.
- Registration continues through the last day to add/drop in the Fall semester. Transfer students and ’30s will be able to drop and add classes as availability allows.
- Courses that students do not get as part of their Fall schedule can be picked up in the Spring. High-demand introductory courses are offered both semesters.
When registration day comes, if your ‘30 or transfer Deac doesn’t feel like they got the right schedule for them on day one, please tell them to work through some of the above suggestions, and ask for help if needed (please note, we ask students – not their parents or families – to contact offices if needed):
- Each ‘30 and incoming transfer student has an assigned academic advisor in the Office of Academic Advising who has been communicating with them via their WFU email address all summer. There is a robust Planning for Registration website that will help our ‘30s/transfer students be thoughtful and intentional about planning their courses.
- The Office of the University Registrar will be the go-to place for registration-specific technical questions: they have a How-to’s and FAQs page, and G-chat help during registration.
Finally, I would ask families to trust the process – and remind your students to trust the process, too. Registration can feel stressful, but things have a way of working themselves out over time. I have seen this year after year (both for myself in my student days at Wake, as an administrator for 27 years, and as the mother of a college student).
