Summer is an established slow time on campus for big news, as most of our students are at home and many faculty are working on research and scholarly activities away from campus. But for our incoming P’30 families and students, summer is one of the busiest times, as they are trying to get all the information they need for the start of school.
Don’t worry, we’ve got you, ’30s and P’30s! So today’s Daily Deac is primarily for you.
Have questions about learning accommodations and student success? Meet the Director of CLASS (Center for Learning, Access, and Student Success)
I wanted to let new P’30 families know about upcoming sessions on July 23 and 30 with CLASS (Center for Learning, Access, and Student Success):
“Want to learn more about learning accommodations and on campus student success resources? Join CLASS’ Executive Director Dr. Michael Shuman for an informal question and answer virtual session. Dr. Shuman will review the academic accommodations process and answer any questions you may have. He will also outline tutoring and academic coaching options available to all students. Join us on July 23 or July 30 at 6:00 p.m. Eastern. Register here.”
Dr. Shuman and his CLASS team do incredible work with academic accommodations, academic coaching, tutoring, and more. This article from a few years ago talks about an incredible collaboration between Dr. Shuman of CLASS, Dr. Erhardt of the math department, and Kathryn Webster (’17), a visually-impaired student who needed a stats class that was highly visual in nature. What they created together as a solution for Kathryn is nothing short of remarkable.
Do read it. It is inspirational.
Ship your student’s boxes to school with Storage Scholars
Our new ’30 students got a message this morning about Storage Scholars. I thought this might be of great interest to our P’30s as well. Storage Scholars is a company that was started by WF students in 2017 (and was seen on Shark Tank).
Here’s the gist of the message:
“Wake Forest University is partnering with Storage Scholars to give students the option to ship everything directly to their residence hall room before they arrive on campus. No hauling boxes from the car. No last-minute department store runs. Just walk in and start settling.
Here is how it works:
- Delivered to your residence hall room: Everything is delivered to your room on or before move-in day.
- Ship from home: Send your own boxes or have Storage Scholars ship you a complimentary packing kit. FedEx will pick up directly from your house.
- Shop online: Use the Storage Scholars facility as your shipping address when ordering from Amazon, Target, IKEA, or anywhere else.
- We receive and notify you: Every package is scanned in with a photo. You get a text and email confirmation when it arrives.
- Delivered to your residence hall room: Everything is delivered to your room on or before move-in day.”
You can learn more or sign up at the Storage Scholars website if you are interested. As always, the choice to sign up – or not! – is yours. We just want to make sure you are aware of this as an option.
P’30 weekly message on meal plans, campus dining, and textbook purchases
As we will do most Tuesdays up until move-in, we send a message to P’30s to let you know key upcoming deadlines, and to feature a topic of interest. Today’s message is about critical logistics: eating on campus and getting textbooks and course materials. You can read it here.
I also want to offer this pro tip: once your student has registered for classes later in July, buy textbooks and course materials via our Bookstore. They have textbooks with many options to choose from: new or used, rentals, digital, and more.
Often textbooks have various editions, and if you/your student tries to source their textbooks on their own, they may not find the right edition. But if your student buys from the Bookstore, they will get 100% of their course materials just by entering their Student ID.
Move-In Guide for ’30s is now available
For people (like me!) who want to read ahead and have plenty of time to understand what is expected, we have published our comprehensive Move-in Guide, which provides all details and instructions our incoming Class of 2030 and their families need to know.
- Important note for families of older Wake Forest students: We have a new check-in process this year for new student. We no longer have “suggested move-in windows;” we have specific check-in appointments (selected by our ’30 students). Students and families who arrive earlier than their check-in time will be directed to wait in a dedicated parking zone until the student’s appointment time.
That’s all I’ve got for you today, Daily Deacdom. Have a great evening!
