Happy midweek, Daily Deacdom! Today is still a touch on the chilly side (but thankfully sunny). Temperatures are still doing their crazy spring swing: we will be in the 80s, then the 70s, then 50s and 60s.

weather for the next week, as of 3 25 26

Between the temps swinging back and forth and the pollen emerging, I am hearing a lot of sneezing and sniffing amongst our students. Seasonal allergies are real – and especially for first-year students who may be experiencing different pollens than they were used to in the K-12 years – and so a bit of OTC allergy meds might be worth thinking about.

Now on to today’s news…

Upcoming Bookstore sales and employment opportunity

I love the Bookstore – and in fact grabbed a bunch of new swag last week at a big sale they were having. My friends at the Bookstore let me know of some upcoming opportunities that may be of interest:

  • Ring & Diploma Frame Sale (March 30–31): A Herff Jones representative will be on-site for ring sizing, questions, and order placement.
  • Apple Sale (April 6–10): they will be offering great savings on Mac® and iPad®, including up to 10% off the newest models.
  • Student Marketing Director Position: The Bookstore is currently hiring and would love to connect with students who may be interested. Applications can be submitted using this link.

So if you are a P’26/’26 looking for graduation swag, a family member or student of any year looking for Apple products, or a student who wants to get some work experience in marketing, do check these out.

Wake Washington at the National Press Club

I was up in DC to visit one of my Wake besties who runs the administrative side of Wake Washington. They had a great event and I thought the Daily Deacdom might be interested in it:

“Wake Washington took class night to the National Press Club last week. This spring, students are studying media literacy, and class last Wednesday evening was a full house of local DC Wake Foresters for a panel co-hosted by the Wake Washington Center and the Program for Leadership & Character on “Principled Journalism in a Digital Age.” The panel was moderated by Professor of Practice Justin Catanoso (MALS’93), and panelists included Shane Harris (’98) and Jeffrey Goldberg of The Atlantic and CBS Face the Nation’s Margaret Brennan.”

You can watch the video here (use password Deacs1834! to access the video). And for any students interested in Wake Washington, I highly recommend you check out the program. Several of my past advisees have done Wake Washington and it is an amazing semester of growth and building connections that could be helpful to a future careers in DC (or in government work anywhere).

Upcoming lectures of note

Every year, there are a few special lectures held at Wake, and there are a couple coming up that might be of interest to our students:

  • Monday, March 30, 5:30 p.m.: Living Your Values with Beth Hopkins: Former prosecutor and civil rights attorney Beth Hopkins has earned national recognition and is a recipient of Wake Forest’s Distinguished Alumni Award. As one of the first Black female residential students at the University, Hopkins helped pave the way for future generations. In this keynote, she will reflect on how life experiences shape our values and leadership style. Farrell Hall, Broyhill Auditorium.
  • Christa Colyer to deliver April 2 Annual Poteat Lecture: Chemistry Professor Christa Colyer will present the 26th annual Poteat Lecture. Colyer’s lecture will take place on Thursday, April 2, at 4 p.m. in ZSR Auditorium and is titled “Beyond Measure: Chemical Analysis in a Complex World.” Light refreshments will be served after the lecture.

Germany finds World Cup oasis outside FIFA’s base camp catalog

Most of the teams participating in the 2026 World Cup selected their base camps from a catalog of 64 options compiled by FIFA. But of the more than 30 that have announced locations so far, five opted to source their own training sites and accommodations. Germany, the first team to announce its base camp, is among those that chose to go outside the catalog. Following a rigorous 18-month selection process, the team landed on Winston-Salem, where it will train at Wake Forest University’s Spry Stadium and stay at the nearby Graylyn Estate for up to six weeks. Read more in this story in the Sports Business Journal.

There is a lot of interest in the German national team and how people in Winston/students here for Summer Session might be able to see them. I am told those things are all very much in the discussion phase, but I will bring you confirmed info once I have it.
