It is bitterly, brutally cold today – or at least cold for Winston-Salem. This morning’s low was 8 degrees, and right now it is a balmy 26 (that feels like 18 with wind chill).
We are keeping our eye on the forecast, as it looks like there could be more winter weather this weekend. But it is too soon to know, so we’ll get right to today’s news.
Tomorrow will be remote learning again
We got a message mid-afternoon today announcing that tomorrow (Wednesday, Jan. 28), we will be closed again for in-person classes, but will have virtual classes and remote learning. Faculty will communicate course-specific expectations for remote learning.
The message specified that “while conditions on campus have improved, road conditions across the surrounding community remain variable with refreezing happening overnight.” My husband had to go to work this am and he has a Jeep/4 wheel drive, and said that the roads were not good, very slick. Read the full message at Wake Alert.
Family Weekend 2026 date announced: Oct. 2-4
The football schedule was released last night, so here is the news you have been waiting for so you can mark your calendars: Family Weekend will be held Friday-Sunday, October 2-4.
That is all the detail I have now: just the date. Normally it will be much later in the spring/early summer before we have info on how to buy football tickets, when event registration will go live, etc.
For now, look into your hotel reservations – and again, if there is not a hotel you like with availability in Winston-Salem, look at Greensboro or High Point, also consider Vrbos, AirBnb, etc.
Families of Juniors: application open for 4+1 M.A. program in Content Creation & Strategic Storytelling
My colleagues have asked me to remind families of juniors (or juniors in the Daily Deacdom!) of this great new program about content creation and digital storytelling:
“Juniors: Applications are open for the new 4+1 M.A. program in Content Creation & Strategic Storytelling. Open to any major. Click here to learn more and apply. Applications are due Friday, March 6. The program will also host two open houses: on Wednesday, Feb. 4, at 6 p.m. at the Grad School in Brookstown, 200 Brookstown Ave; and on Thursday, Feb. 5, at 11 a.m. in The Studio, ZSR Library.”
Housing emails that went to students
As you might know, Residence Life and Housing (RLH) is making some changes to housing selection for the 26-27 year. If you and your student have not yet done so, please review the class specific messaging.
After reading their class-specific message, if your student still has questions (or if you do), please ask your student to follow up with RLH about those questions. It is important for your students to be getting to know the department and making connections. RLH will also be doing open office hours and information sessions (dates TBA) that students are strongly encouraged to attend to get answers to their questions.
If you and yours are dealing with snow and cold – may you stay warm and safe, and may the cold weather pass quickly. And for those of you who are living in warmer climes, I’d be totally happy if you sent the warmth our way :)
