I hope you all had a happy Thanksgiving and made some wonderful family memories. We’re now in that spring to the finish: classes run through Friday of this week, and then finals begin (see item below).

It’s also noticeably colder, and we even have a chance for snow by Friday. For some students, the snow would be a delightful distraction; others may be a “snow crab,” like me (my family liked to call me a snow crab because I hated long stretches of snow). Only time will tell what Mother Nature has in store for us.

I’m starting out today with reminders on the Lighting of the Quad and Late Night Breakfast, just in case you did not see them in the bonus Daily Deac we had last Weds. (and if you did read those, just skim past).

Lighting of the Quad tonight at 7 p.m.

A reminder to all students who subscribe to the Daily Deac (or their families who want to give a gentle nudge), the Lighting of the Quad is tonight at 7 p.m. Bundle up, because it will feel like 40 degrees, according to my weather app. It’s a fun, festive event to welcome in the spirit of the upcoming holidays.

Parents and families, I don’t know that you’ll be able to see much from the Quad Cam, as most of the action takes place close to Reynolda Hall (and the Quad Cam is at Reynolda pointing towards Wait Chapel), but it is worth a try.

Bicentennial Space Plan pop-ups Tuesday, Dec. 2 and Wednesday, Dec. 3

Wake Forest is going through an ambitious space planning effort, and there are two upcoming events that we’d love to have students drop by to share their perspectives:

  • Tuesday, December 2 from 3-5 p.m. at the Manchester Plaza/Mag Quad fire pit: There will be hot drinks and snacks! (Rain plan is Benson Center Food Court vendor tables)
  • Wednesday, December 3 from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at the Benson Center Food Court vendor tables

These two pop-up sessions will allow students, faculty, and staff to:

  • See example images showing potential improvements to campus
  • Vote on your favorite images to help the planning team understand the campus community’s design preferences
  • Review the draft planning principles that inform our space planning efforts

Both sessions will have the same content, so your Deacs can share their thoughts at whichever is more convenient.

Late Night Breakfast reminder – Thursday, Dec. 4

A reminder that our Deacs need to pencil in Late Night Breakfast in The Pit on their calendars for this Thursday from 10 p.m.-midnight in the Pit in Reynolda Hall.

Late Night Breakfast is an event where our faculty and staff serve students all sorts of delicious breakfast foods and spreading good cheer as students prep for finals. It’s so much fun.

Stress Less Fest – Friday Dec. 5

If your Deacs want to head into Finals Week with a peaceful, easy feelin’, encourage them to stop by Stress Less Fest on Friday:

“Free stress-relieving activities and snacks from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and free chair massages from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.!  Take your frustration out on some bubble wrap, find some zen while coloring, or create a self care kit for Finals Week!”

Final exam schedule

Some families, particularly our first-years/P’29s, may be asking “When can my student come home for the semester?” That answer is completely dependent on your student’s final exam schedule (and team schedule if they are a student-athlete with games in Dec.).

You can see the final exam schedule here. You’ll need to talk to your student about when their last exam is, and when they plan to come home. All students must leave their residential communities by 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 14 (unless approved for Winter Break Housing).

P’29 Weekly Message – preparing for Winter Break

For our P’29s in the Daily Deacdom, many of you just had your Deacs home for a short Thanksgiving break. So you got a taste of what it is like to have your newly-independent young adult back under your roof for a few days.

But very soon they will be home for a month, and it may be helpful to think about what worked at Thanksgiving Break, what expectations you and they have for their time home at Winter Break, and adjust/compromise accordingly. Read the message here.

That’s all I have for you today. Wishing you a great week!
