Lighting of the Quad – Monday, Dec. 1
| One of my favorite holiday events of the year is coming up the first Monday your Deacs are back from Thanksgiving break: the Lighting of the Quad: “Join Student Union and the Office of Student Engagement for one of Wake Forest’s most cherished traditions – Lighting of the Quad! ✨ Monday, December 1st | 7:00 PM | Hearn Plaza ✨ Gather on Hearn Plaza as we celebrate the holiday season with lights, music, and community spirit. What to Expect: – Performances from talented student groups that bring the spirit of the season to life. – Remarks from President Wente, the Chaplain’s Office, and other university administrators. – Giveaways including custom ornaments and scarves. – Seasonal refreshments to keep you warm and festive. – A magical lighting ceremony as the Quad glows with hundreds of twinkling lights. |
This year, Lighting of the Quad also celebrates the spirit of giving. Support Kimberly Park Elementary, a local Title I school, by donating classroom supplies that help teachers and students thrive. Bring items to the event of contribute through the Amazon wish list – and help light up both the Quad and our community.”
This is a wonderful event that helps your students get into the spirit of the holiday season. I hope they will attend.
Late Night Breakfast – Thursday, Dec. 4
Longtime Daily Deac readers know that I talk about Wake being like a smorgasbord – and the more bites you take at the grand buffet of all Wake has to offer, the richer your experience will be.
Next Thursday after your Deacs return from Thanksgiving we will have a real buffet for your students, and it’s called Late Night Breakfast. The short version is this: Late Night Breakfast in The Pit is an event where our faculty and staff serve students delectable breakfast food while enjoying music and conversation at the start of finals week.
The longer story of this great tradition is this:
Dr. Charles “Chuck” Longino, Jr. was the Washington M. Wingate Professor of Sociology and director of the Reynolda Gerontology Program. He loved teaching undergraduate students and always searched for ways to connect with them outside of the classroom. The original Late Night Breakfast, a tradition started by Dr. Longino, was held before end of semester finals. Every year he recruited administrators, other faculty members, and staff to serve a late night breakfast to students.
Dr. Longino passed away in 2008, and now the Division of Campus Life carries this tradition on for our students. It is only through a collaborative effort that this tradition can continue and flourish with the same vitality that Dr. Longino embodied. Late Night Breakfast offers faculty and staff members an opportunity to engage with students in a causal environment outside of the classroom. It also offers the opportunity for staff members and faculty members from all over campus to come together.
Late Night Breakfast is So Much Fun. For the students, they get a bunch of delicious food and lots of encouraging words from the faculty and staff who work the event. There is always great music – and sometimes a spontaneous line dance springs up. Sometimes the Deacon comes to pay a visit. Some students come in their pajamas. It truly is a blast.
I will be there on Thursday, Dec. 4th slinging hash with my Santa hat on. I hope to see your students there!
And now I am signing off for PTO. Hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
