In this Issue: reflections on the beauty of our campus
Late October and early November are undoubtedly the prettiest times to see the fall leaves changing. Every day, your students get to walk across our beautiful campus and see the wonders of nature unfolding.
One of the things I most appreciate about the liberal arts education I received as a Wake Forest student is that we were exposed to a wide variety of subjects: the arts, literature, history and the humanities, the various social sciences, and of course the natural sciences like biology. None of us can be good in all those subjects, but we can be conversant in the basics, which in turn can inform how we view the world through multiple lenses and disciplines.
On a busy day, when your students are preoccupied by an upcoming test or a lot of homework, they may not look at the changing leaves and see art, or think philosophically about the passing of time, or the amazing process that is photosynthesis. But if they have a minute to stop, and breathe deeply, and let their mind wander, they may see more than just the leaves.
Here are some of the best photos from our fall, along with some quotes to appreciate the views.
“I see the turning of a leaf dancing in an autumn sun, and brilliant shades of crimson glowing when a day is done.” —Hazelmarie Mattie Elliott
“As long as autumn lasts, I shall not have hands, canvas, and colors enough to paint the beautiful things I see.” —Vincent Van Gogh
“The fallen leaves in the forest seemed to make even the ground glow and burn with light.” —Malcolm Lowry
“October is a symphony of permanence and change.” —Bonaro W. Overstreet
“And the sun took a step back, the leaves lulled themselves to sleep and autumn was awakened.” —Raquel Franco
“Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower.” —Albert Camus
