It’s a new week, and we are getting ever closer to Thanksgiving break, which I know our students are looking forward to with gusto. This will be a short week for me, because my ’27 is about to turn 20 and we will do some celebrating in Raleigh. But never fear, I will have Daily Deacs posted even during my absence 🙂
Let’s get to all the news I have for you.
Center for Literacy Education launched
There was a headline that I missed last week, and that is that Wake has launched a new Center for Literacy Education:
“Wake Forest University has launched the Center For Literacy Education to explore how literacy education can strengthen individuals and communities through teaching, research, creative activities and programming.
In today’s world, literacy means more than the ability to read and write.
‘Literacy affects all aspects of how we live and learn,’ said Alan Brown, director of the center and associate professor of education. ‘From health literacy to historical and civic literacy to stem and environmental literacy, I think there are a lot of possibilities for all sorts of collaborations across the university.'”
It will be exciting to see the things that develop out of this effort! You can read the full article here.
Mountain Strong t-shirts for Hurricane Helene relief
If you have been looking for a way to help support our neighbors in Western NC who have been impacted by Hurricane Helene, here is one thing you can do:
“One-of-a-kind Wake Forest “Mountain Strong/Show Humanitate” T-shirts are available through The Graphic Cow Company for $35. A portion of the proceeds will support the N.C. Disaster Relief Fund. Shirts will ship after Dec. 1.”
So you can order online (might make a nice holiday gift for your Deac?) or if they are at the Nov. 19 basketball game against Western Carolina, a limited number of shirts will be available for purchase at that game. Apparently the t-shirt is based on a design by Emma Engle (’27) – one more reason to support this effort.
Student volunteers needed for TurkeyPalooza
Every November, Campus Kitchen embarks on a Thanksgiving project to help feed delicious holiday meals to folks who are housebound, infirm, or need help. So they created TurkeyPalooza, which will run daily this year from Nov. 17-23. And they need student volunteers to help prep, cook, and deliver all the meals:
“Help us get ready for the biggest feast of the year…TurkeyPalooza!
Wake Forest Campus Kitchen is cooking up 500+ Thanksgiving meals from scratch to spread love and support across our community, and we need volunteers to help!”
Interested students can log in using their WFU credentials to volunteer. Giving back to the community is part of who we are as an institution – and for most of us, when you are engaged in a wholesome volunteer opportunity like this, you might find you get back more than you give (in terms of personal satisfaction and feeling of goodwill, etc.). So encourage your Deacs to volunteer.
And if this is not the right opportuinity for your Deac but they want to serve in some other way, they can login with their WFU credentials to GivePulse to see what other activities might spark joy for them.
Reminder: you can watch a livestream of Dr. Wente’s Presidential Address this Thursday at 4 p.m.
I hope some of your Deacs will attend Dr. Wente’s annual Presidential Address this Thursday at 4 p.m. in Brendle Recital Hall. Interested parents and families can also view the address via livestream.
Test anxiety workshop Nov. 20
A little bird from the CLASS office whispered in my ear that they are offering a test anxiety workshop next week on Wednesday, Nov 20th at 6 p.m. in Benson 410. All students are invited to attend. It will last one hour and I am told that “students will leave with actionable strategies for their next test!”
If you have test-anxious Deacs, please be sure they know this is an option to help them.
Reminder re after-hours nurse line at Deacon Health
As we get closer to flu season, I wanted to remind families that in the event their Deac finds themselves ill after hours or when Deacon Health is closed, they still have options:
“Deacon Health partners with an outside agency for after-hours nurse advice. Calling this line after hours is for guidance related to current medical concerns ONLY. Please call 336.758.5218 and follow the prompts to be connected to this service.
Please note that outside of clinic hours, the nurse cannot assist with appointment scheduling, test results, billing questions, or any other administrative questions.
If you need to seek acute care outside of normal Deacon Health clinic hours, you can find a list of local urgent care facilities here.”
I know that illnesses are not always neatly timed to fall within clinic hours, so wanted to be sure that families knew of the after-hours nurse line and local urgent care facilities if needed.
Honoring Veterans Day
Finally today, I want to recognize that today is Veterans Day and pay tribute to our veterans. In case you did not know the history, Military.com says this about Veterans Day:
“Veterans Day — originally called Armistice Day — began as an occasion to reflect upon the heroism of those who died in our country’s service. It falls on November 11, the anniversary of the signing of the armistice that ended World War I.
In 1954, the name of the holiday was changed from “Armistice Day” to “Veterans Day” in order to recognize veterans of all wars.”
To our veterans and their families, thank you for your service and sacrifice.
