We continue to look at the forecast and hope that all in the path of Hurricane Milton remain safe. We also recognize the continued struggles in Western NC in the wake of Helene. Our hearts go out to everyone who is impacted, or has loved ones who are.

Today I have just a few things to share.

ICYMI – WFU and NC State marching bands on ABC News last night

In case you missed it, the wonderful story of the Wake Forest and NC State marching bands playing Amazing Grace to honor Hurricane Helene victims made national news last night: ABC News shared the story. Enjoy.

Fall Break hours of operation

For students staying here for Fall Break next weekend (Oct. 17-18), the Fall Break hours of operation website provides a list of schedules for frequently-accessed services and building hours. I always advise students to plan ahead and make sure their needs are covered and they know what is open when.

Dates of breaks and important info re: our residential communities

The Office of Residence Life and Housing sent a message to students about upcoming breaks. Here are key dates from that message and things families should know:

Fall Break: Thursday, October 17-Sunday, October 20

  • Residents may remain in their room for any portion of the break at no extra cost.
  • Students who are leaving for break must remember to lock their room and take both their Deacon OneCard and key(s) with them.

Thanksgiving Break: Wednesday, November 27-Sunday, December 1

  • Residents may remain in their room for any portion of the break at no extra cost.
  • Students who are leaving for break must remember to lock their room and take both their Deacon OneCard and key(s) with them.

Winter Break: Our communities close at 2 p.m. on Sunday, December 15, and reopen at 9 a.m. on Saturday, January 11

  • Those approved for as part of an early arrival group for Spring 2025 will receive confirmation from our office by December 18. We are unable to accept individual early arrival requests.
  • Only those approved to stay for Winter Break Housing will be permitted to remain.

Winter Break Housing Request

  • The University offers housing for students who require housing for the entirety of the break.
  • There is an added cost of $1,100 for break housing and students may be required to relocate.
  • To request winter break housing, students must submit a request in the Housing Portal before 9 a.m. EST on Wednesday, November 6, 2024.

Important voter registration reminders for students wishing to vote in person on election day (or by mail) in NC

I hope your students are aware of the following dates and options:

  • Last call to register to vote in person on Election Day or by mail in NC – deadline is October 11 at 5 p.m.
    • The Office of Civic and Community Engagement is collecting voter registration forms until October 11 at 3:30 p.m. at a drop box outside Benson 506. OCCE will drop forms off at the Board of Elections to ensure we meet the 5:00 p.m. deadline.

If they miss that deadline, they can do In Person Early Voting from October 17-November 2; they can register and vote in the same day.

NC now has Voter ID laws, so they will need photo ID (their Deacon OneCard is acceptable). Students should consult the Voting in the 2024 Election website to ensure they know all the requirements for residency requirement and more. Students can also use the free resources of TurboVote to make their voting plan.
