Our thoughts and prayers are with all Wake Foresters as our region navigates the aftermath of Helene. The storm has had a devastating effect on so many. The images we are seeing are just unimaginable.
Families, we are committed to supporting our students most impacted by Helene. Staff from Campus Life and the Provost and Deans’ offices have been reaching out to students whose families may have been affected by the hurricane to offer their support. If your student is in need, please contact 336-758-CARE (336-758-2273) or encourage them to do so.
As Wake Foresters, it is second nature for us to take good care of each other and lend a hand to those who need it. This morning, President Wente sent the message below to our campus community. We wanted parents and families to see her message as well.
Some of my dearest friends and classmates come from the mountain towns that have been devastated. To them, and to all other Wake families whose lives and homes have been impacted, know we are with you.
From President Wente: Embracing ‘Pro Humanitate’ after Helene
Dear Wake Forest community,
On behalf of the University Cabinet, I write to share our sadness with the devastation and loss of life caused by Hurricane Helene across the Southeast. Conditions in many places are catastrophic, resulting in nearly half a million people still without power, hundreds of roadways closed, and interrupted or disabled internet and phone connectivity. The storm has crippled rural communities where medical facilities, roadways, and educational settings — all decimated by the storm — play a central role in the daily lives of communities.
We remain in contact with our colleagues in the North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities, the UNC System Office, and the emergency response community. We encourage you to visit a new Wake Forest University website that will be updated with information and support opportunities as they arise.
We recognize that many members of the Wake Forest family — our students, faculty, staff, alumni and their loved ones — are facing tremendous challenges in the storm’s aftermath. Staff from Campus Life and the Provost and Deans’ offices continue to reach out to students across all of our schools and the College who have permanent addresses in affected locations, and faculty and staff have been encouraged to do what we do best by giving grace and understanding to the many impacted students. In these challenging times, I am heartened by the calling inherent in Pro Humanitate and seeing our community offer its knowledge, talents and compassion to those impacted by Hurricane Helene. Thank you for embracing our motto in this time of need.
