Between me being gone for NC State Family Weekend (which was a blast, great to see our ’27!) and dedicating yesterday’s blog to the aftermath of Helene, there are a lot of bits of news to share today. We’ll jump right into them!

When is Family Weekend 2025? (We won’t know for a while!)

I have had a slew of families asking what the date is for Family Weekend 2025.

Short answer: we don’t know yet, and won’t likely know until closer to early February.

Longer answer: the date for Family Weekend is typically set based on the football schedule, which we likely will not know until late January or early February. We will announce Family Weekend as soon as the date has been decided, but I do want to be transparent that it does take a bit of time between the football schedule release and the setting of the date (we need to check on availability of hotel space, see if there are religious holidays that coincide, check the academic calendar because it can’t be too close to move in, nor too late in the semester, etc.).

Also note that once the football schedule is released, the announcement of the Family Weekend date will not be immediate (given the reasons above), but we will be working on finalizing the date as quickly as we can.

Family Weekend t-shirt pick up

I am told from the Family Weekend team that any families who had pre-purchased t-shirts (but did not pick them up) got an email about how their student can claim their shirt. Details below.

“Beginning tomorrow (October 2), your student may pick up the order in the Office of the Dean of Students, Benson University Center Room 139 (on the other side of the first floor lobby from the post office). The office is open Monday through Friday from 8:30am to 5:00pm.

Please note that this email is not being sent to your student.

T-shirts will be available until 5pm on Wednesday, October 16.”

So if you did not get your pre-purchased t-shirt, pass this info on to your Deac so they can claim it for you.

World Cultural Festival

One of the highlights of the fall is our World Cultural Festival, which is coming up this Friday from 5-8 p.m. on Lower Davis field:

“Join the Intercultural Center for World Cultural Festival. This annual event hosted by the IC will feature many offices/departments and student organizations on campus that represent the multitude of cultural identities we have at Wake Forest. There will be free food, free giveaways, cultural performances, and music to enjoy.

This event is open to all members of the Wake Forest community. We encourage all to come learn and experience this day of cultural celebration at Wake.”

If your Deac needs to start their Friday night off right, encourage them to go to the World Cultural Festival!

ConsentCon proposals

One of my colleagues wanted me to pass this on to parents and families. If you have a student interested in issues of consent, please encourage them to submit a proposal for our ConsentCon conference:

“ConsentCon is a conference dedicated to exploring the meaning and operationalization of consent on college campuses. ConsentCon 2025 will be held on Tuesday, February 11 at Wake Forest University and will engage students, faculty and staff in a community conversation about consent in pursuit of a campus free of interpersonal violence. We are currently seeking proposals to continue dynamic and participatory learning to further deepen participants’ understanding and practice of consent. We encourage you to submit proposals that are out of the box and engaging! Proposals are due by 5 pm on Wednesday, October 16, 2024. Please click here to submit a proposal.”

This might be a really fun way for a student – or group of students – to come together on a meaningful project.

Hit the Bricks and Family Weekend photostories

If you were here for Family Weekend and arrived a day early, you would have had the chance to witness Hit the Bricks, which is honestly one of my favorite days of the year. A bit of rain didn’t ruin the fun, as you can see in this video and this photostory. (And at the bottom of the website, you’ll see a box to subscribe to photostories, so all new ones will be sent straight to your inbox!)

Also for your viewing pleasure is our Family Weekend photostory. Relive all the great memories here!

Queer History Month calendar of events

Eeach October, the LGBTQ+ Center recognizes and celebrates Queer History Month (QHM) (because Pride month is normally observed in June, that makes it difficult for our community to come together in community since it is during the summer). Your Deacs can see the calendar of events and hope they will plug in to any that interest them!

P’28 Weekly Message and ’28 Letters So Dear

Calling all P’28s! This week’s weekly message is about midterms (which are looming for our students). Your ’28s got their Letters So Dear yesterday.

Did you know that Jimmy Carter spoke at Wake Forest twice?

The Divinity School gets the gold star of the day for tweeting out this factoid (as long as I have worked here, I am not sure I knew this!)

Annual Security and Fire Safety Report

Last but certainly not least, the 2024 Annual Security and Fire Safety Report is now available on the Wake Forest University Police website.

That’s all the news that’s fit to print today, Deac families!
