Friends, I cannot believe the good fortune that looks like it is about to descend upon W-S this week: temps in the high 70s for Weds. move-in of our ’28s and transfer students, and then low to mid 80s for the weekend.
This is not normal W-S weather, but I will take it. Speaking of weather, I saw some terrible reports from the Northeast this morning of torrential rains and flooding in the Connecticut area among others. We have many Wake families in the NE and I hope that you and yours are safe and dry.
I’m coming down to the wire on things I have to prep for parent and family Orientation, so let’s jump right in!
P’28s: message to your students about their participation in New Deac Week
This morning, our incoming ’28 students received an email about their Participation in New Deac Week. Here is a snippet:
“Every part of New Deac Week is intended to connect you meaningfully with the people and resources you will need to succeed at Wake Forest. It is important that you spend your first days in our community fully engaged with Orientation activities and other members of the Class of 2028 as well as our newest transfer students. For these reasons, it is our expectation that you attend only those events listed on the New Deac Week schedule. You can also quickly download our New Deac Week mobile app by going to your app store and searching: “WFU Orientation Programs.”
Sophomores, juniors, and seniors will also return to campus the weekend after you move in. We recognize their social events may be attractive to you. However, these events typically conflict with Orientation programs and are therefore closed to new students. We also know that local law enforcement is attuned to the start of school and off-campus parties that are unsafe environments and disruptive to the surrounding community. We say this not to be dramatic, but because we want you to make well-informed decisions and consider the potential consequences.”
Families of ’28s, please stress to your new Deacs the importance of attending all the New Deac Week programs. It is to their benefit.
Winston-Salem Open: Aug. 17-24
For the tennis fans among us, the Winston-Salem Open is taking place right now at the Wake Forest University Tennis Complex.
“In 2011 what was formerly a parking lot adjacent to a football stadium, the Winston-Salem Open emerged. Now, it stands as an award-winning, international tennis event providing fans and players with a world-class experience in the heart of the North Carolina. The event serves as the final ATP Tour stop prior to the US Open.”
You can view the schedule. If you are in town for move-in and have some free time, this might be a great event for you to check out!
Howler Update
I have had a couple of questions recently about The Howler, our yearbook. I am told by the editor in chief that “the yearbooks are printed and have just been shipped out,” so folks who ordered should be receiving them soon.
