  • Research with impact: URECA
  • Reminder: CLASS Meet the Director session July 31
  • Reminder: Tuition due August 1
  • Clarification for P’28s re: residence hall room pictures

We’re nearly at the end of the week, and also nearly at the end of July, which feels impossible. I’ll be out tomorrow, so will have a pre-posted Daily Deac. Today’s blog focuses on four Rs: two reminders, one story about research, and a clarification about residence hall rooms.

Research with impact: URECA

One of the things that really distinguishes Wake Forest is that our undergraduate students can get involved with research with faculty members. That’s something that may not happen at larger research universities, where faculty might only be involving their Masters or Ph.D. students in their research. In fact, we have an Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities (URECA) Center just for this purpose.

To give you an idea of what this looks like, some of my talented colleagues made this short video to show the research work of Keyi Huang (’25). She is working on the issue of how heat impacts tomatoes’ ability to be fertilized and generate new seeds.

If your student has a particular research interest – or just really likes one of their faculty members and wants to help in some way – encourage them to talk to that faculty member to ask if there are opportunities to collaborate.

Reminder: CLASS Meet the Director session July 31

In case you missed it, I wanted to remind everyone of the upcoming session on July 31 with CLASS (Center for Learning, Access, and Student Success):

“Want to learn more about learning accommodations and on campus student success resources? Join CLASS Director Dr. Michael Shuman for an informal question and answer virtual session. Dr. Shuman will review the academic accommodations process and answer any questions you may have. He will also outline tutoring and academic coaching options available to all students. Join us July 31 at 6:00 p.m. Eastern. Register here.”

Dr. Shuman and his CLASS team do incredible work with academic accommodations, academic coaching, tutoring, and more. This article from a few years ago talks about an incredible collaboration between Dr. Shuman of CLASS, Dr. Erhardt of the math department, and Kathryn Webster (’17), a visually-impaired student who needed a stats class that was highly visual in nature. What they created together as a solution for Kathryn is nothing short of remarkable. Do read it. It is inspirational.

Reminder: Tuition due August 1

Just a reminder that tuition is due August 1. Students must add parents/family members/payers as a Third Party in Workday *and* then grant them permissions to specific financials actions. If your student hasn’t done this yet, encourage them to use this student job aid to set up payers and grant permissions.

Once your student has made you a payer and granted specific permissions, this parent/family job aid will help you see all the steps to make a payment. It also has a helpful FAQ and more.

Clarification for P’28s re: residence hall room pictures

Finally, I want to offer a clarification about yesterday’s post, where I shared schematics of my ’27’s first-year residence hall room. He does not go to Wake Forest, so that is not a room that any of your students will live in. I shared it just to offer some perspective that in case you think your student’s room looks small, it could be a lot smaller 🙂

You can see information, floor plans, and photos of your ’28’s residence hall on the south campus website.

Have a great rest of your week, Deac families!
