It has been a relatively quiet hurricane season for NC, but with Hurricane Debby brewing, I thought it was time to bring this one back from the archives.

Hurricane season and our distance from the coast

When my mother was still alive, she panicked any time she heard the news say the words “hurricane” and “the Carolinas” in the same sentence 🙂 So I thought it might be helpful to talk proactively about Wake’s location relative to the coast just to give some perspective.

Winston-Salem is very much inland from the coast. It’s 3-4 hours away to the closest beach. Maps to Wilmington, NC and Charleston, SC are below so you can get a sense of the scope. You can click the pictures to enlarge.

In my 30+ years of living in Winston-Salem/working at WFU, there have only really been a couple of hurricanes that took a wonky turn north after making landfall and impacted Winston-Salem. And by “impact,” what I really mean is it rained for a couple of days and was windier than normal. (Once a hurricane has to travel 3-4 hours over land, it pretty much peters out into just a wind and rain event.)

I hope Debby does not have a negative impact on any of our Daily Deac-ers and I also hope the hurricane forecast stays calm for the rest of the season. If nothing else, I hope this post might reduce any anxiety one might feel should a hurricane arise off our coast.

New student mailbox numbers are delayed

This news came to me this morning regarding a delay in the publication of new students’ campus mailbox numbers:

“First-Year Student,

The assignment of PO Box numbers has been delayed.

Once assigned, student campus PO Boxes will be available by logging into Workday. The primary institutional address will display the PO Box number.

In the meantime, if you need to have anything mailed to Mail Services, please address the package as follows:

Student Name
1834 Wake Forest Road
Incoming Student (New Student)
Winston-Salem, NC 27109″

A note to our older families: I am told by our Mail Services team that all carriers recognize the 27109 zip code now (and we no longer have to use 27106 for some carriers and 27109 for others).

’28 Weekly Message: Dealing with the Unexpected
