Longtime readers of the Daily Deac know that I liken college to a giant smorgasboard. There are lots of dishes to sample, and some you will savor. Your Deacs’ experience will be richer and more interesting if they take many bites and try new things. Today there are a couple of smorgasboard events to mention, as well as a few news items. Enjoy!

P’24s: seniors must apply to graduate by October 1 and more news

I received several bits of info that P’24s may be especially interested to know:

  • Seniors must apply to graduate by October 1st. A Graduation Application must be submitted via WIN by October 1 to graduate in May 2024. Please be sure your student applies by the deadline if they are on track to graduate in May. You can also see the policy for graduation distinctions on that same page.
  • Seniors should mark their calendars for Senior Portraits for The Howler [yearbook – October 23-27. The Howler editor tells me that information on how to sign up will be available closer to the portrait dates.
  • Did you know we have a Countdown to Commencement clock on the Parents and Families page? That might be a fun thing to check from time to time as you await your Deac’s graduation 🙂

Jazz Pianist opens Secrest Artists Series this Thursday

The 2023-2024 Secrest Artists Series premieres with Jason Moran and The Bandwagon on Thursday, Sept. 21, at 7:30 p.m. in Brendle Recital Hall. Pianist and composer Jason Moran has established himself as a risk-taker and trendsetter for new directions in jazz. Rolling Stone calls him “the most provocative thinker in current jazz.” His incomparable talent has earned Moran a prestigious MacArthur “Genius Grant” Fellowship and the title of Kennedy Center Artistic Director for Jazz. Since 2000, Moran and his trio, The Bandwagon (Tarus Mateen, bass, and Nasheet Waits, drums), have dazzled audiences at elite venues worldwide. For more information and tickets, visit the Secrest Artists Series website.

Tickets for students are free, and I can’t stress enough that students are not going to have access to world-class concerts and artistic talent for free after they graduate, so encourage your Deacs to take advantage of Secrest Artists Series concerts while they can!

University Theatre: Agatha Christie’s Witness for the Prosecution opens Friday

Just in time for Family Weekend, Witness for the Prosecution opens Sept. 22:

“Leonard Vole, a young man admittedly strapped for money, is accused of murdering a wealthy older woman. The high-profile trial has London buzzing and many are curious about Leonard’s enigmatic German wife that he rescued and brought to London after the war. This thrilling courtroom drama with its twists and shocks has long kept theatre goers on the edge of their seats dying to know, ‘guilty or not guilty.'”

If you are going to be here for Family Weekend and wish to see Witness for the Prosecution, please consider purchasing season tickets to the full University Theatre schedule and returning to visit your Deac on future show weekends; you can also buy single tickets. Our theatre and dance productions are tremendous and well worth your time.

Weather Outlook for Family Weekend and Family Weekend reminders

I took a quick look at the 5 day forecast for Winston and it looks – at least as of this morning – like Friday is going to be a lovely day and Saturday and Sunday show a chance of rain. See below.

Five day forecast for Family weekend 2023 (high of 76 Friday, around 69-74 Sat and Sun with 49% chance of rain)

I expect that the forecast will continue to shift a little between now and Friday, so keep your eye on it if you are coming to Family Weekend and be sure you have packed for all eventualities. (Having just gone to an NC State football game that was full sun and beastly hot, the idea of overcast is appealing. The rain notsomuch).

A couple of important Family Weekend reminders:

  • There is a Clear Bag Policy for the football stadium for those going to the game.
  • You can find parking information here.
  • I am getting some great questions so far for my Coffee time with y’all on Saturday morning. Please keep those coming! Submit here. Nothing is too big or small to ask!
