- Move-in dates for returning students (i.e., sophomores through seniors) and a word to all families about travel arrangements
It’s a hazy day here and we are on a code Orange air alert (according to my Weather Channel app). The sky is hazy and it smells faintly like a campfire if you go outdoors; this is the drift from the Canadian wildfires reaching us, I guess.
Here’s a few tidbits of news for today:
A message from President Wente and Provost Gillespie
This afternoon, the campus community received a message from President Wente and Provost Gillespie in regards to the Supreme Court ruling on affirmative action. Their message reads, in part:
“Today, the Supreme Court of the United States issued an opinion in two cases concerning the use of race as a factor in higher education admissions. The Court ruled that race-conscious admission programs at Harvard University and the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill were unlawful.
We write to affirm that Wake Forest University will not waver in its commitment to creating and sustaining inclusive, diverse learning communities; our mission and values have not and will not change. We will continue to recruit and enroll academically qualified students of diverse backgrounds who seek an intellectual home at Wake Forest where they belong and thrive, and in compliance with the Court’s ruling.”
You can read their full message here.
FYI for new students who have submitted their required health and immunization forms
I have received several questions from new families whose students have uploaded all their health and immunization forms, but are still showing as non-compliant. My expert source at the Student Health Service told me they are processing the information as quickly as possible that all the students are entering. This process usually takes 5-7 business days to complete, depending on how many students are in the queue (and we have had a lot of recent uploads!).
Have your student check back on the Student Health Portal 5-7 business days after they uploaded their documentation. If there is something missing, the student will also receive a secure message with what is needed.
Please do not call or email the Student Health Portal to check on the status of your student’s paperwork. If your student uploaded their documentation but it has not been accepted yet, do not panic, even if it is after July 1st.
If you student uploaded 8-10 business days ago and is still not showing as compliant and has no Secure Messages about missing info, then your student can email Student Health. But please give us time to process everything in the queue.
Move-in dates for returning students (i.e., sophomores through seniors) – and a word to all families about travel arrangements
While much of the communications we have over the summer are directed towards new first-year students, we want to be sure to share information for our returning students (i.e., sophomores through seniors). A couple of the key dates you might want to know:
Returning student move in: August 25-26
First day of classes: August 28 (from the Academic Services calendar)
And while the fall Academic Services calendar will show you breaks and such, we caution families of all years to hold off on making travel reservations for breaks until your student gets their syllabus for each course and knows the date of their final exam, what the course attendance policy is, etc.
I was talking to a new parent at my beloved kiddo’s college about breaks. They happen to be a professor (at another college) and said to me “I’m a professor and so many students tell me they can’t take the final because they’re parents scheduled a flight home. That’s not okay.”
