Omaha this weekend!

Our Baseball Deacs are in Omaha for the College World Series and this is an incredibly exciting time for Wake Foresters. Here’s the skinny from GoDeacs.com on the game:

“After going a perfect 2-0 in the Winston-Salem Super Regional last weekend, No. 1 overall seed Wake Forest heads to the Men’s College World Series for the third time in program history and the program’s first appearance in the MCWS since 1955.

The Demon Deacons will open the 2023 Men’s College World Series against No. 8 overall seed Stanford on Saturday, June 17 at 2 p.m. ET inside Charles Schwab Field Omaha.

The winners of the Wake Forest and Stanford matchup as well as LSU and Tennessee will meet on Monday, June 19 at 7 p.m. ET while the losers will face off at 2 p.m. ET on Monday, June 19.

All games will be broadcasted on ESPN.”

If you couldn’t make it to Omaha in person, mark your calendars, set your DVRs, and plan to tune in on Saturday to cheer our team to victory!

Juneteenth reading list

I just celebrated my 24th anniversary as a staff member at Wake Forest. One of the things I have loved the most about working here is being surrounded by subject matter experts across all academic areas. It is wonderful to be able to tap into the knowledge of others on campus. And today we get to tap into this expertise.

In this piece for The Conversation, our humanities professor Corey D. B. Walker shares a list of six books that can help people better understand the history and meaning of Juneteenth. “Collectively, these books about Juneteenth offer fresh perspectives on the history and culture of African Americans on a quest to fully express their freedom. Juneteenth is also an invitation for all Americans to continue to learn about and strive for freedom for all people.”

Since Juneteenth is coming up on Monday, if you are looking for books, Dr. Walker has you covered!

University Parkway entrance road closure

Summers on college campuses are typically times of many construction projects. We have one going on right now that impacts campus traffic: the University Parkway entrance to the Carroll Weathers Drive intersection is closed, and will remain closed through Friday, July 15.

The Polo Rd. entrance gate will open at 5 a.m. daily beginning Monday, June 19 through Friday, August 4. See more details here.

No Daily Deac on Monday

University offices will be closed on Monday for the observance of Juneteenth, so no Daily Deac. We’ll be back next Tuesday – enjoy your weekend, Daily Deacdom!
