Strategies to finish those looming projects, papers, and prep for finals

The finish line for the semester is on the horizon: last day of classes (LDOC) is April 26th. Your Deacs just have to get through a couple more weeks.

But it’s spring, and when the weather is good, and you just want to hang out with your friends or enjoy campus, sometimes that looming research paper or final project can seem like an insurmountable obstacle.

There are all sorts of platitudes about how to tackle a big job. I am particularly fond of these two:

How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.

the journey of 1,000 miles begins with one step

If you start to hear that “this is so hard” or “this is impossible,” you can pull these out of your back pocket and remind your Deacs that all they have to do is take a step forward. Make some progress, however small. That might look like any of the following:

  • Do an hour’s worth of research.
  • Write a draft.
  • Meet with the project team to come up with a timeline.
  • Take 30 minutes to brainstorm.
  • Set up an appointment with a research librarian.
  • Just make some effort towards the goal.

Incremental progress is what gets you there – in academic projects as in life. Take that one bite, or that first step, and then keep going.

Letters So Dear for our ’26s

For any P’26s, here is this week’s issue of Letters So Dear that your students received yesterday.

Storage Scholars summer storage/moving option

I was sent an email from Storage Scholars that they wanted me to share with the Daily Deacdom:

“As a final reminder, Storage Scholars can simplify your student’s move-out process by providing on-campus packing essentials, such as boxes, tape, bubble wrap, and labels, eliminating the need for a trip to Home Depot. Once your student has packed their belongings, they lock their room and head home, no pickup appointment needed!

Storage Scholars will handle everything, storing your student’s items over the summer and delivering them to their new room upon their return. With storage and shipping options available for summer school, the entire summer, fall, and beyond, your Deac can save the time, expense, and labor associated with hauling everything home or to a storage unit.

To learn more about pricing, their student entrepreneurship story, or how they have paid over $1,000,000 in student wages since their founding in a South Hall residence hall room in 2017, visit their website.”

Storage Scholars was on Shark Tank several months ago – super cool achievement for this Wake Forest-originated business to be growing!
