News from All Across Campus
Today I will share some of the things that have come across my radar this week. November is Native American Heritage Month, and the Intercultural Center and Office of Sustainability invite students to participate in the second annual Tohi Talks dialogue series. Tohi Talks are set in the Tohi Garden behind Angelou Hall and are facilitated, contemplative conversations through which participants can engage with Indigenous knowledge and interdisciplinary subjects. Students can register here. There is a robust set of NAHM programming; click on the photo to enlarge.
The Face to Face Speaker Forum is excitedly preparing to host internationally renowned author and Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist for The New York Times, Thomas Friedman, in conversation with PBS NewsHour’s Nick Schifrin on November 15 at Wait Chapel.
The evening will consist of two events, including a student-only event beginning at 5 p.m. in Wait Chapel, followed by the evening Keynote Address at 7:30 p.m. (also in Wait Chapel). Students are invited to attend both events for free; details are here. Parents and families can purchase tickets for the Keynote Address here.
Congratulations to head Field Hockey coach Jennifer Averill, who was named ACC Coach of the Year. This is the eighth time she has earned that honor. Coach Averill is amazing in so many ways – field hockey being at the top of the list, of course – but she adds so much to our campus community. I am just so thrilled for her, and for the five players who earned All-ACC honors.
Congratulations also go to our outstanding Debate team. They reported on their Twitter account: “Deacs win Gonzaga on a 3-0 decision over Michigan in finals!! Ari/Ana complete the tournament without losing a debate.”
ZSR has added an amazing new tool to help make your Deacs’ study lives easier: “We are so excited to announce that Occuspace is now at ZSR! Occuspace empowers students with real-time data on how busy a space is. The best part is that you have access to this real-time data via the Waitz app. To access this information, download the Waitz app and choose Wake Forest University –> select ZSR Library. You no longer have to waste time looking for a space to study. Happy tracking!”
For our news lovers, this week’s WFU in the News covers Oct. 24-30. Here’s a great story about how some of our students are using their skills for the good of our local community: “Smith Reynolds Airport will seek a state grant to cover most of the cost to stabilize a section of Brushy Fork Creek where extreme erosion has eaten away at property in an adjacent neighborhood. Wake Forest engineering students are studying the site as part of a senior design project to determine how much of the creek erosion is linked to the loss of trees.”
For our P’26s, this week’s Weekly Message for First-Year Families is about the Honor Code; read it here. You can also read this week’s Letters So Dear, which your ’26 Deacs received on Monday.
That’s all the news that’s fit to print, as the old saying goes 🙂
