Upcoming CLASS events and The Howler
We had a big weekend in football – a 70-56 win over Army, and now the Deacs are ranked #13 in the nation! Go Deacs! This weekend is our Homecoming, and I hear that this will be a Blackout (i.e., everyone is encouraged to wear black to the game). More info closer to the end of the week.
In other upcoming events, CLASS (Center for Learning, Access, and Student Success) has a host of activities taking place next week (November 1-5) that we want your Deacs to attend if they can. It is the 2nd annual Academic Resources Awareness Week, sponsored by CLASS and Student Government. I am told that each day will highlight a different academic resource on campus. Collaborating partners include WakerSpace, the Math and Stats Center, the Computer Science Center, Wake Speaks Speaking Center, the Writing Center, Office of Academic Advising, the ZSR Library, and the Chemistry Center – basically all the departments and centers your Deacs should know about!
One of the goals of the week is to raise awareness for – and normalize the use of – these great, free resources. And there are some really fun events planned to help our students learn about academic resources. I am also told that Tuesday’s student panel will be a highlight, with peer tutors, ZSR ambassadors, OAA student advisors, and CLASS ambassadors on the panel, with Student Government moderating. And by the way, free pizza for all who attend!
Your Deacs can – and should – be following @wake_sg and @wfuclass on Instagram for more details about the events, and find more details on the Corq app.

There is an incredible short term study abroad opportunity next summer: REL 290 (3hrs): The Art of Meditation: Walking the Ancient St. Cuthbert’s Way. “This course offers a site-specific study of early medieval Christianity and one of its core spiritual traditions, pilgrimage. The course will reflect on the flexibility of early medieval Christianity to accommodate non-Christian cultural traditions and the relevance of such religious tolerance for today. Secondly, another timely aspect of the course is Celtic Christianity’s respect for the natural world as exemplified in St. Cuthbert’s hagiography and in the Lindisfarne Gospels’ unique manuscript illuminations and calligraphy. The daily activity of walking along the Way and conversing with local experts offers a whole person pedagogy. It invites students to immerse themselves into the intersections between ecology, the history of Christian spirituality, personal growth, and interdisciplinary academic work in the art of meditation.”
If your Deac is looking for a 3 credit summer school class and wants to look into this, see this flyer. and visit the Center for Global Programs and Studies website. Not gonna lie, I would like to take that class and walk/meditate my way through Scotland next May!
For our P’25s, your Deacs got their Letters So Dear on Monday, and the Weekly Message for First-Year Families this week is about registration (which will take place next week).
After a big deluge lastnight, it’s cool today: high of only 62. Glad to have some wonderful fall weather!
