Hit the Bricks!
Hit the Bricks is today! And it is one of the most fun days of the fall. It’s a day for the whole community to rally behind a common cause – supporting cancer research. There are very few of us, sadly, who have not been impacted by cancer, whether personally, or within their family or friends. Hit the Bricks gives students, faculty, and staff a way to get some exercise, have some fun together, and raise money for this important cause. Whether your Deacs are on a team, participating as an individual, or just watching, I hope they all make it up to the Quad at some point to be part of this great community event. You can catch a glimpse of the action via the Quad Cam.
Some of you have asked me about whether Wake will offer a flu vaccine clinic on campus – and the answer is yes! There will be an on-campus influenza vaccine clinic on October 25-26 from 8:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. in the Sutton Center. I will bring you more details as they are finalized. For now, encourage your Deacs to mark this on their calendars.
For those of you coming to town for Family Weekend, there is a terrific opportunity on Saturday. In the spirit of radical collaboration, Wake Forest has partnered with New York City’s New Museum and dozens of local community partners to celebrate contributions in art, tech, design and culture. “This is a fantastic example of finding partners within our own city and across our organizations to generate new ideas and advancements in creative expression,” said Wake Forest University President Susan R. Wente. To mark a year of this creative collaboration, the IdeasCityWS Marketplace of Ideas festival will be held on Saturday, Oct. 2, in Bailey Park from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. in downtown Winston-Salem. For more information, visit the IdeasCityWS website.
As we conclude our special Sophomore Week, our ‘24 Deacs got a message encouraging them to connect with the Office of Personal and Career Development to begin thinking about how to make the most of their major as they consider their future career.
Students also received their weekly issue of WFU Should Know, the student e-newsletter.
In research news, the professional organization I belong to, AHEPPP: Family Engagement in Higher Education, is running a national research study to understand the needs and experiences of families during the COVID-19 pandemic. This survey will help us and other programs like ours understand your experience and consider how we can better serve parents and families as they support their college students. If you have a few minutes to share your thoughts and views in this online survey, I’d be most grateful (and you’ll be representing Wake the national picture!) The online survey takes about 15 minutes to complete. In order to be included, you’ll need to complete the survey by November 5. After completing the survey, you can choose to be entered into a drawing to win 1 of 5 $100 gift cards. Your responses will be kept private and will not affect your relationship with Wake Forest.
For all who will be making their way to Winston-Salem for Family Weekend, I wish you safe travels and a terrific weekend with us!
