Soggy Campus Day
In this Issue:
- Information from Deacon Health about stomach bug
- Thrive Dimension Champion Awards
- Upcoming Apple sale
- Elite Performance Training for high school athletes
Today is the second Campus Day for Accepted Students, and this is not the weather we’d hoped for. Not only is it rainy, but it is cold as well. But I met a number of enthusiastic students this morning – some already committed, some on the verge of deciding – and they were making the best of the weather, as were their families. May your students all make the best choice for them (and if it ends up being Wake, more’s the better!)
Thankfully it looks like the sun will come out tomorrow, Sunday’s high is projected to be 68, and Monday 84. So spring will return very soon. Have a great weekend, y’all!
Information from Deacon Health about stomach bug
My colleagues at Deacon Health shared this message with me this morning and I wanted to pass it on to our Daily Deac-ers:
“Over the last week, Deacon Health has treated a number of students with symptoms of gastroenteritis, or the ‘stomach bug.’ Gastroenteritis is a very contagious virus that causes nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and in some cases, fever and stomach pain. The symptoms associated with this outbreak have been mild and are not life threatening. They usually resolve in about 24 hours.
What should I do if I develop symptoms?
- Remain in your room (except to use the bathroom) to prevent the spread of infection until your symptoms have completely resolved.
- Rest your stomach (nothing to eat or drink) until at least an hour has passed since you last vomited. Once your stomach is ready, follow a bland diet, avoiding anything spicy or greasy, limiting citrus or tomato-based foods, and avoiding alcohol or other substances.
- Students experiencing persistent, severe vomiting or diarrhea should seek care at Deacon Health, your personal health care provider, or Urgent Care or emergency healthcare facility. Students with mild-moderate symptoms do not need to seek medical care.
- Wash your hands after using the restroom to prevent the spread of infection. Do not prepare food for others until you have been well for a minimum of 2 days.
What about class?
- Do not attempt to go to class while you are ill or in early recovery. Email your professor to report illness and discuss accommodations for absences.
How can I prevent becoming ill with gastroenteritis?
- With gastroenteritis, the most effective way to stop the spread is to practice good handwashing and personal hygiene.
- Wash hands with soap and water for 20 seconds prior to eating, using the bathroom, or after handling any items touched by someone who has been ill with norovirus.
- Do not share food or beverage with others.
- Get adequate rest and hydration.”
As a reminder, in addition to regular clinic hours at Deacon Health, there is an on-call nurse available 24/7 to assist students with current healthcare concerns during non-clinic hours. Students can call 336.758.5218 and follow the prompts.
Thrive Dimension Champion Awards
This year’s Thrive Dimension Champion awards event has been announced:
“Please join us as we celebrate faculty and staff who have exemplified health and wellbeing in their work during the 2025 Thrive Dimension Champion Awards. Awardees from across the campus community who have demonstrated dedication to the Eight Dimensions of Wellbeing have been nominated. The awards ceremony will take place on Tuesday, Apr. 22, in the Reynolda Hall Green Room from 4-6 p.m., followed by a reception honoring our awardees and our collective impact coalitions. The entire campus community is invited to attend.”
So encourage your students to attend the Thrive Dimension Champion Awards. In addition to being a terrific opportunity to build their network in general, this could be a wonderful way to meet faculty and staff who have demonstrated excellence in promoting wellbeing. These are good folks to know!
