Mother Nature continues to zig and zag with us in NC. After a fairly chilly few days for April, we are projected to have a beautiful sunny day, 84 degrees, today, then dip back down into the high 60s for a few days, then high 70s/low 80s for much of next week.
A number of announcements hit my inbox over the weekend and into this morning, so we’ll jump right into today’s news. Take what serves you and skip anything that doesn’t 🙂
The Dean’s Student Advisory Panel: seeking applications
Is your student looking for an outlet for increased academic engagement? This might be a wonderful opportunity for them to shine:
“The Dean of the College Office seeks engaged students who think critically about learning and ways to enhance and improve academics to join the Dean’s Student Advisory Panel (DSAP). This panel is a place where students can express and advise others about Wake Forest academics and share knowledge and insight about the student experience. The panel meets monthly. Applications are due Friday, April 18, at midnight. Applications can be found at go.wfu.edu/dsap/. If you have any questions, please email Aditi Samavedy at samaal20@wfu.edu.”
Summer upgrades coming to ZSR
Summer is typically the time on college campuses when you do a lot of construction and renovation work; it is easier to do when there are fewer classes/students/faculty in the buildings. And this summer, ZSR is getting some renovations: roof, flooring, bathrooms, and more. It may be a bit noisy this summer, but the end result promises to be worth it. Read the full story here.
Two new Photostories: John Legend Face to Face and Jam for Janey
There were two noteworthy events last week: our Face to Face event with singer John Legend, and a student basketball tournament raising funds for a scholarship to honor the memory of student Janey Thompson, who passed away unexpectedly in 2024.
My talented photography colleagues have put together photostories for both events: see John Legend and/or Jam for Janey. As a reminder, if you want photostories to be sent straight to your inbox as soon as they are published, you can subscribe at the bottom of the photostory.
Reynolda House’s Wyeth at Kuerner Farm exhibition getting rave reviews
If you are a subscriber to the Washington Post, you may have seen that art critic Sebastian Smee, visited Reynolda House’s exhibition Wyeth at Kuerner Farm earlier this month. His article about the exhibit ran online this past Friday.
You can also see aention of the exhibition in the recent issue of Garden and Gun magazine.
If you are coming here to move your student out at the end of the semester, I highly recommend this exhibit. I grew up in the area where near Wyeth painted in southeastern PA and seeing the paintings felt like a sort of homecoming for me, a total delight. Also, some of the paintings have never been shown publicly, which makes this exhibition that much more special.
Dr. Julie Freischlag to retire at the end of 2025 as CEO of Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist
This morning, President Wente sent a message to the campus community announcing that Dr. Julie A. Freischlag will retire at the end of 2025 as CEO and chief academic officer of Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist, chief academic officer and executive vice president of Advocate Health, and executive vice president of health affairs at Wake Forest. She will also conclude her 38-year career as a practicing vascular surgeon. Read the full message.
