It is a very cold start to the week here in Winston-Salem. It had been quite windy throughout the week and this morning felt downright frigid when I opened the door to let the Chap-dogs out. Staying with the weather-related news, we’ll jump right into our first topic for the day: snow (maybe).

Is there snow coming to W-S??

And now, my friends, we play the “Will She or Won’t She?” game with Mother Nature. Over the weekend, there were a lot of people talking about impending snow in Winston-Salem on Wednesday – maybe to the tune of 3-5 inches, which definitely would shake up our fair city.

I took a look at the Weather Channel ten-day forecast this morning and here was their prediction for Wednesday: “Watching a potential winter storm. Variable clouds with snow showers. Temps nearly steady around 30. Winds NE at 5 to 10 mph. Chance of snow 60%. 1 to 3 inches of snow expected.”

Our local NBC affiliate, WXII, has this to say (skip ahead to about the 2:30 minute mark for the predictions). They are predicting we will likely see snow on Weds. rather than ice, and it could be in the range of 1-3 inches.

That said, a LOT can change in the next 24-28 hours, so there could be updates to this forecast. Your Deacs (and you if you wish) can keep an eye on your national weather app of choice, or WXII12.com if you want Winston-Salem specific forecasts.

This is a great exercise for your students in prepping for possibilities and being prepared. Students would be smart to consider whether they have enough of their needed essentials in case we do get snow so they avoid traveling on snowy roads: e.g., refill prescriptions if they are running low, consider whether they need some snacks for their residence (or have food at their off-campus residence for seniors), etc.

This is by no means a reason to panic. It is a reason to think ahead and to make smart choices 🙂

Health and Safety inspections of residential communities

I saw a message from the Office of Residence Life and Housing about upcoming health and safety inspections of residences:

“Health and Safety Inspections will occur between Sunday, March 2 and Wednesday, March 5. All spaces will be entered for inspections and involve a visual overview of your room to ensure the absence of health and safety hazards/violations.”

Students should be sure to read the message thoroughly so they are aware of all important details of the inspections.

Engineering Week and Engineering in the Forest photostory

Engineering Week at Wake Downtown will be held February 17-22, and features several events, activities and opportunities designed to provide a look inside the program. Families can also see a photostory about Engineering at Wake Forest, and visit the Wake Downtown website.

If you have not visited Wake Downtown, I encourage you to do so the next time you are in town. We are located right by the beautiful Bailey Park greenspace, and there are a number of great eateries (and bars, for those over 21!) in the area. A personal favorite of mine is Cugino Forno, which does proper Neapolitan pizza. In good weather, having a pizza and a beer from Incendiary Brewing next door on the big patio is a solid win.

The Bailey Power Plant, part of the old Reynolds Tobacco factory complex in downtown Winston-Salem, has been renovated for mixed use development, seen on Thursday, October 8, 2020.

Congratulations to Club Ice Hockey – new champs!

My friends from Campus Rec shared the good news that our Club Ice Hockey team won the ACCHL Tournament Championship last night in the M2 Elite Division. We defeated WVU 2-1 in overtime. This is the first ACCHL Title in program history.

Here is a link to some pictures from the weekend (I am told the Team Champ pics folder probably has the best ones from yesterday.) There is also a coverage on the Campus Rec Instagram, and this video from the Wake Forest Instagram.

Message from President Wente and Reminder of Founders Day (Thurs. Feb. 20, 4 p.m.)

This morning, President Wente sent a message to campus. It read in part:

“This coming Thursday we will gather in Wait Chapel for our traditional Founders Day celebration, marking 191 years of commitment to our academic mission. Reflecting on this commitment has been particularly poignant over the past several weeks as we are witnessing a rapidly changing landscape for research universities. A series of executive orders, federal policy announcements, and subsequent legal challenges are impacting all of higher education and Wake Forest.” Read her full message on the dual commitments of a founder.

And now my plug for Founders Day, which is coming up this Thursday. I hope your Deacs will attend (4 p.m. Thursday in Wait Chapel), and that parents and families will join in the livestream. What is Founders Day, you ask?

“Each year the University marks its founding in February 1834 by coming together to celebrate and reflect on our traditions, our history and our people.”

At Founders Day, we also hear the winning speech from the Senior Colloquium. This year’s winner is Zac Anderson, and I am excited to hear Zac’s speech. I also want to congratulate all the Senior Colloquium participants: Runners-up Anne Rack and Elise English; and Honorable Mentions Sydney Aikens, Lisi Chapin, Douglas Giles, Charleston Kemper, Stephanie Lu, Heavyn McDaniels, and Lillian Sutton.

The Founders Day program will also feature musical selections from the University Chamber Choir, remarks from President Susan R. Wente and Dean of the Law School Andy Klein, and the presentation of the Medallion of Merit, the University’s highest honor.
