It’s a grey day here in Winston-Salem but happily the temps are still warm(ish) – we should reach into the mid to high 60s today and tomorrow. I know many of our Northeast and Midwest families have snow and/or ice in their forecast. I wish I could send you some of this warmth.

Today I am bringing news of a few events and/or opportunities that might apply to your Deac. As always, take what you need and scroll past the rest.

Wake Washington Summer Housing

I was so happy to receive the news that once again Wake Washington, our amazing domestic study-away program, will be assisting students this summer:

“Wake Washington will be opening its apartments to any continuously enrolled Wake Forest student (e.g., undergraduate, graduate, law, business, etc.) who will be interning in Washington, DC this summer. The application is now open, and students may visit https://washington.wfu.edu/housing/summer-housing/ for the dates, rates, and application. Please note that we cannot lease to recent graduates (i.e., not continuing at WFU) or non-WFU students. Review of applications will begin later this month and continue on a rolling basis until all available beds are filled. There are 16 total beds to fill across four 2-bedroom apartments; preference is given to students staying in groups of 4 for the full summer.”

Lest someone ask, let me stress that there is unfortunately no wiggle room on taking students who have already graduated or students from other schools.

Principled Pluralism Fellowship application open

My friends at the Program for Leadership and Character let me know that they are taking applications for an amazing summer opportunity:

“The Principled Pluralism Fellowship aims to support a small group of undergraduate students who will pursue research on pluralism, jointly author research on the importance of principled pluralism, work to develop the skills and virtue need to promote meaningful dialogue across difference. The Fellowship includes a stipend of $4,000 and double-occupancy housing on campus. Fellows also receive personal mentoring from experts in the field. The Fellowship is currently scheduled to run for 8 weeks from June 2–July 25 and will be led by the Program for Leadership and Character. Students can apply today.”

I would have looooved to do this sort of work during my summers in college. Hopefully this might spur the interest of some of your Deacs!

Growth Mindset Workshop – Feb. 13

I got word that in celebration of next week’s Mental Health Week (which I believe is organized by Student Government), CLASS (Center for Learning, Access, and Student Success) will be offering students a one hour workshop entitled “Meeting Challenges with a Growth Mindset” on Thurs Feb. 13 at 12 p.m. in Benson 410. Pizza will be served.

Join us for Founders Day – Feb. 20

One of the cherished traditions of Wake Forest is Founders Day:

“Each year the University marks its founding in February 1834 by coming together to celebrate and reflect on our traditions, our history and our people. This year’s program theme, Many Voices, One Wake Forest, will highlight our foundational commitment to academic freedom and freedom of expression. Fostering a robust learning environment where many voices can speak, write, challenge, debate and learn is critical to who we are. And let us also embrace our shared connection as one campus community, one Wake Forest. We hope you will join us at Founders Day!”

This year’s program takes place at 4 p.m. on Thursday, February 20 in Wait Chapel and includes the annual senior oration, the Medallion of Merit presentation, musical selections from the University Chamber Choir, and remarks from President Susan R. Wente and Dean of the Law School Andy Klein.

The ceremony will be livestreamed for those unavailable to attend in person.”

We encourage parents and families to join the the livestream (or watch the recording after the fact).
