As we close out this week and look ahead to next week, there are a couple of things to note. First, Monday is a holiday in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr., so there will be no classes and administrative offices are closed.
Second, it looks like we will have a few days of particularly brutal cold early next week, so our Deacs are going to want to pay attention to the forecast and bundle up as they head to class. While the forecast can always change from now until then, here is a screenshot of the projected frigid temps:
Change to Jan. 22 Spring Career Fair
Keeping in the vein of weather-related news, I received word last night that there has been a change to next week’s Career Fair:
“Due to the potential for inclement weather next week, the Spring Career Fair scheduled for January 22 from noon to 4 p.m. in the Sutton Center has been transitioned to a virtual format. We appreciate your understanding as we prioritize safety while ensuring students can still connect with employers. If your organization is hiring and would like to participate, please reach out to hutchens@wfu.edu.”
From Wente’s Desk: Big Moments Are Learning Moments
Dr. Wente publishes a blog entitled From Wente’s Desk, in which she shares her reflections. She has a new entry about the impact of a beloved faculty member and mentor in which she reflects on big learning moments, academic freedom and free expression, and humor. Here is an excerpt:
“Big moments – of tension, of challenge, of change – are learning moments for us all. They prepare our students for their life journeys. They awaken us as scholars to the urgent questions of our time and inspire us to seek solutions. They invigorate us as teachers and scholars to use our expertise, our passion, and our knowledge to create the living and learning environments for our students to discuss, to explore, to reimagine our real world. And not to do so as mere academic exercise, but instead as a practice of living a life of ethical engagement with our communities – as a daily aspiration to be catalysts for good.”

Welcome back message from Dean of Students Matt Clifford
As we kick off the spring semester, Dean of Students Matt Clifford has some advice for students: embrace the opportunities ahead, explore new academic paths, engage in campus events like MLK Day activities and upcoming Big Four rivalry games, take care of yourself, and more. Here is an excerpt:
“For our first-year students, I urge you to expand your living and learning experience now that you have a semester under your belt! Sophomores, you will officially have the opportunity to declare your major in the coming months. As you deepen your academic exploration in one area, don’t forget that the liberal arts always ask you to think broadly. We’re welcoming nearly 700 students back from experiences across the globe! I’m so excited to see our juniors reconnect and catch up with one another. And for our seniors, keep your eyes open and take in every moment of your last semester.”
