It’s a beautiful day in the forest of Wake, in the words of our late and much beloved former basketball coach, Skip Prosser. The sun is shining, the temperature will be high 70s/low 80s, and you can see the first signs of fall in the trees closest to Reynolda Hall; view it live on the Quad Cam.

In a few short weeks, we should have all the fall colors on display. Might be worth bookmarking the Quad Cam; typically the last week of October and the first week of November are peak color times for the trees.

Upcoming CLASS workshop

Our wonderful CLASS (Center for Learning, Access, and Student Success) team sponsors a series of events each semester that they call OWLS, for Outreach Workshop Learning Series (fun fact: did you know that the CLASS logo has a wise old owl in it???)

There is an upcoming OWLS event that might be of interest to your Deacs. They will be hosting Accessibility is for Everyone: Tools and Practical Tips for Learning and the Everyday on October 10th from 4-5 p.m. in Benson 410. Encourage your Deacs to take advantage of this session (and I am told there will be pizza!)

Birthday cake opportunity and Halloween care packages

My friends in Deacon Dining wanted families to be aware that they have a birthday cake ordering service. If your student, like mine, has a birthday that falls during the academic year, you might want to take advantage of this opportunity to get them a little something special for their special day. You can scan the QR code in the photo below, or order online (go to the Order menu then Celebration Gifts).

Additionally, the Office of Residence Life and Housing sent a message to families of resident students about Halloween care packages; you can learn more or order here. The order deadline is October 12.

Life in The Forest message to ’28s

The Office of Residence Life and Housing also sent this message to ’28 students about events and activities taking place this week, so that new students know how to connect to a vast array of events and opportunities.

LEARN model for alumni

Did you know that the OPCD (Office of Personal and Career Development) has a branch dedicated to alumni? Their Alumni Personal & Career Development Center is here to help alumni navigate their lives and careers after college. They have developed the LEARN model:

“LEARN Wake Forest Alumni Career Development Model™ is your self-directed, personal learning framework to develop professionally and take the next step in your career. No matter where you are – new employee, mid-level manager, seasoned professional, or somewhere in between – the LEARN Model is adaptable to you.”

You can learn more about LEARN (see what I did there?) on the LEARN website. This might be particularly helpful for families of seniors and young alumni.

Observance of Rosh Hashanah

Rosh Hashanah begins tonight at sundown. For our Deac families who will be observing, I wish you Shana Tovah. May you have a sweet new year.
