Happy Friday, Deac families! It’s a beautiful sunny day here and we are thrilled to be just one week away from Family Weekend! We can’t wait to see you. Today’s Daily Deac is all about events: events happening this weekend, how your students are informed about campus events, and more. Enjoy!

The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940

Our campus is in for a treat with a big University Theatre production opening tonight:

“John Bishop’s campy, intricately plotted murder mystery is filled with larger-than-life characters, the twists and turns you’d expect from a good Agatha Christie story, and a healthy serving of silliness. It’s winter, 1940, and a blizzard can’t keep a group of ambitious theatre folk from assembling at an upstate New York mansion to audition their new musical for a wealthy patron. Bodies begin to drop immediately. Love, ambition, espionage, dad jokes, recipe tips: The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940 has it all.”

Students (and families!) can learn more about showtimes and ticket prices. I can’t recommend our theatre productions highly enough. They are spectacular!

aWAKE All Night

Our campus has another opportunity for fun tonight: our aWAKE All Night event, casino edition:

“Join Student Union in Benson for a Casino aWake All Night! Bring your friends to play Black Jack, Roulette, Texas Hold ‘Em, and Laser Tag. Win chips to enter to win raffle baskets! Make your own license plate and enjoy food and drinks!”

Read more about aWAKE All Night.

Harvest Moon Festival

As if the previous two events weren’t enough for this weekend, we also have the Harvest Moon Festival:

“Experience Harvest Moon Festival with A.S.I.A.! Dive into one of the biggest cultural events at WFU, and explore this East & Southeast Asian holiday through plenty of food, performances, and entertainment. Harvest Moon Festival is a time to gather with your friends, eat plenty of sushi & noodles, and enjoy amazing guest performances, amongst other activities. Save the date and come with an interest to learn about various Asian cultures!

We are so excited to see you there!

(Harvest Moon Festival is an holiday that is celebrated in many Asian countries. On the day of the fullest moon, many people would gather and enjoy the view while celebrating amongst friends and family.)”

How students learn about events on campus

I forgot to mention in yesterday’s Daily Deac that Puppies on the Quad is taking place today at 2 p.m. If you follow our official Parents and Families Facebook page, which is a page anyone can view (it is not anything you have to join), you might have seen a post about it earlier.

In terms of students knowing what is happening on campus, this fall we started sending a Next Week at Wake: Student Edition email to students every Friday afternoon. It pulls all the events coming up for the next week from the Events Calendar and The Link. So your Deacs would have been able to learn about seeing Puppies on the Quad, or doing Goat Yoga in Next Week at Wake: Student Edition.

Hopefully those of you with dog- and/or goat-loving Deacs were able to attend. Remind your Deacs to be checking Next Week at Wake: Student Edition so you don’t miss any events of interest.

Reminder about alcohol and Family Weekend

As we close out the week, my colleagues from the Office of Residence Life and Housing have asked me to share the following information with families in advance of Family Weekend:

“We are thrilled to welcome you to campus for Family Weekend! This is a wonderful opportunity to connect with your student(s) and experience their university life firsthand.

While this weekend provides an excellent opportunity to celebrate together in community, it is important to remember that as a guest, your student is responsible for ensuring your compliance with University policies (see Guide to Community Living and Student Code of Conduct).

In particular, we’d like to highlight the University’s Undergraduate Alcohol and Other Drug Policy. The policy states that students and guests under 21 are not permitted to possess or consume alcohol, even if they are temporarily storing the alcohol for someone of legal age.

Families, please do not provide your underage student with alcohol when you visit; see more info on why.

While students and guests over 21 may consume alcohol within their residence (e.g., in a living room or kitchen area within an apartment), they may not consume alcohol in common/public areas of residential communities, such as lounges, hallways, or other public rooms.

Your support in helping your students make responsible choices is essential for fostering a safe and enjoyable environment for everyone as they enjoy this special time with you.

We appreciate your understanding and look forward to a fantastic weekend filled with meaningful moments!”
