  • A personal note about Family Weekend

All, we are coming down to the wire in getting ready for Family Weekend. I have a 4:30 meeting this afternoon about Family Weekend and if there are any updates on schedule or events, I will try to add them before 5 p.m. when this is sent out, but for sure tomorrow.

Many of our Wake families in the southeast are keeping an eye on Hurricane Helene. My hope is that you all stay safe and well and out of harms way.

Hit the Bricks is tomorrow – rain or shine!

Over 2,000 people will be participating in Hit the Bricks tomorrow. While students will no doubt be the largest group, there will be faculty and staff walking and running as well. I was signed up for a team, but with my likely broken toe, I am now benched for the event.

All registered Hit the Bricks participants got an email today announcing that the event is happening tomorrow, rain or shine. I am excerpting part of it below:

“We are thrilled to have you for Hit the Bricks tomorrow! Rain or shine, our event will be on the quad! We are closely monitoring the weather and will keep you updated on our Instagram account @wfuhitthebricks. Our instagram will be the official source for weather related information throughout the day tomorrow.

Due to the likelihood of rain into the evening, we have decided to end the event at 5 pm. We will still plan for our usual final remembrance lap and closing ceremony.

Please come prepared for rain, as we will not be allowing umbrellas.”

So if your Deac is walking or running, make sure they read their email and have all the pertinent details. And I hope you will follow on Instagram at @wfuhitthebricks!

Today’s update from the Family Weekend committee

Late breaking word following our weather meeting:

Family Weekend Weather Update:

We look forward to seeing you and celebrating a wonderful weekend together!

Current weather predictions indicate Thursday’s weather into Friday may be windy with bands of rain from Tropical Storm Helene. Based on what we know, all planned activities are proceeding as scheduled. However, there are a few location changes due to the expected weather.

The Deacon Family Festival (1-6 p.m. Friday) has been moved indoors to the 4th floor of Benson University Center. The Family Weekend Check-in will take place on the 3rd floor of Benson (10 a.m.-7 p.m. Friday). Food trucks will be available for families to purchase food between 1 and 6 p.m. Friday in the ZSR Library Circle (adjacent to Benson). Seating is available in Benson and under the dining tent on Manchester Quad.

We encourage you to continue to keep an eye on the forecast, plan your wardrobe/rain gear accordingly, and travel with your safety in mind. For the most up-to-date information about weather affecting the Winston-Salem and Piedmont Triad region, please consult the weather-related websites on this page. Transportation and Parking Updates:

Family weekend guests arriving on Friday should utilize general student parking lots or the overflow parking available at 2400 Reynolda. Shuttle service will be provided from there to Benson for your convenience.  The shuttle will run from 9 AM to 9 PM, and signs will note the pick-up points.  Faculty/staff parking lots are available to guests after 5 pm to assist with overflow parking. Athletics Updates:

As you pack for the weekend. Please note our clear bag policy and the following items that are prohibited from being in the stadium. Additionally, it is prohibited for any fan(s), other than registered student organizations, to bring alcohol into the student tailgate area.  For additional information related to the football game, please go to www.wakeforestsports.com/gameday/

Event Updates:

The student tailgate area opens at 12:30 pm for Family Weekend. Family Weekend participants are welcome to join students at that time if they have a Family Weekend credential and a game ticket. Those without Family Weekend credentials but with a valid ticket may join the students at 2 pm when gates open for the game. Family Weekend credentials can be purchased here. Credentials are $50 for four ($75 for four onsite/day of) and $15 per additional credential. Free food will be available on a limited basis during the Student Tailgate, and beer and wine will be available for purchase with valid identification. You may not bring food or drink to the Student Tailgate Area.

A personal note about Family Weekend

For those of you who will be arriving early on Friday, I will be working the early shift at Family Weekend Welcome Desk and Check in on the 4th floor Benson, and then will be doing my Daily Deac Live informal session in Pugh Auditorium (2nd floor Benson) from 1:30-2:30.

And then…I have to head to Raleigh because it is also NC State’s Family Weekend, and as much as I want to be here with Wake families, I need to be a mom this weekend to my own ’27. I hope you all understand 🙂
