Check in re: Tropical Storm Debby
My hope is that if you are living in the path of Debby, you and yours are safe and well. As for Winston-Salem, we have had a lot of rain in the last 24 hours and it has been pretty blustery at times as well. I had a meeting in ZSR this morning and even though I parked in the closest lot I could and had a big umbrella to shield me from the rain, my pants were soaked in the short walk to ZSR.
This is the sort of storm where you will find pine straw and tiny branches all over your yard and in the streets, and occasionally bigger tree limbs too. I live about 3 miles from campus and (knock wood) our power has not gone out. Mr. Daily Deac works downtown and his office’s power was out midmorning (I guess due to some downed trees), but is now back on.
For those of you who have Deacs finishing up Summer Session II (I believe finals start tomorrow), remind them to keep an eye on the weather forecast and plan accordingly if they need to go out for things, and stay out of the storm if they can.
New online programs from our School of Professional Studies
Many parents and families tell me that they are looking for their ‘third act’ – a time after their children are launched and they can look at doing something for themselves that really ignites their passions, or prepares them to take their career in a new direction. I got an email today from our School of Professional Studies (which was launched in 2021 and offers graduate degree programs that span a wide variety of industries). They have two new online degree programs that might scratch an itch for some of our readers:
“Wake Forest SPS has TWO new programs launching this fall to better serve professionals and their organizations. Like all our degree programs at SPS, both were developed by academic and industry leaders to reflect current and emerging market-trends.
The enterprise risk management market size was valued at $43.22 billion in 2022 with a projected compound annual growth rate of 12.12% over the next six years. To prepare professionals to flourish in this growing field, we are proud to offer an Online Master of Enterprise Risk Management.
In our society, leaders in government and public organizations have a unique opportunity to inspire impactful change in their communities. We now offer an Online Master of Public Administration degree to support emerging leaders who are ready to rise to the challenge of making our society better for everyone.”
If you are interested, you can learn more about the programs that the SPS offers.
URECA (undergraduate research) videos
A week or two ago, the Daily Deac featured undergraduate research about tomato fertility and heat. We have two more undergraduate research projects to share with you: one about how to track – and potentially stop – creek bank erosion, and one about how to make objects in museums accessible to people with visual impairments.
- Undergraduate Research: Max Schellhammer (’26): Pinpointing Erosion Hotspots
- Undergraduate Research: Annelise Witcher (’26): Making Artifacts Accessible
These projects showcase the wonderful work of URECA (Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities Center), whose goal is to promote and celebrate mentored scholarship. Undergraduate research has been a longtime cornerstone of the College’s commitment to academic excellence. URECA’s goal is to provide undergraduate students that opportunity to engage in mentored or independent scholarship.
If your Deac has been interested in exploring the possibility of research with a faculty member – one of the great distinctives of Wake Forest – encourage them to explore the URECA website to learn more.
