Hope that all your Deacs had a safe, healthy, and happy Spring Break (and that a lot of them came home to see you!) We had a great visit with our ’27 from NC State, who was home for break, and capped off the week by getting our new puppy, an 8 week Bernese Mountain Dog named Manfred. (We have two other older dogs who are trying to adjust to this rambunctious newcomer).

I have a lot of ‘catch up’ stories today, so bear with me.

Deacon Health open house tomorrow

Deacon Health is having an Open House tomorrow (Tuesday, March 19) from 4-5:30 p.m. While the office got a new name in January, it is the same great service. Encourage your students to drop by to meet the Deacon Health team of providers, take a tour of the clinic, enjoy light refreshments, and more! Deaqcon Health is located on the ground floor of the WF Wellbeing Center.

Students (and families) are sometimes surprised at the full range of services that Deacon Health provides, and we are trying to help students learn to navigate the healthcare system now before they graduate and have to do it on their own. So the more they can learn now, the better prepped they will be for life after WFU.

Secrest Artists Series tomorrow: Dover String Quartet

Tomorrow night is the Secrest Artists Series: Dover String Quartet (March 19, 7:30 p.m., Scales Fine Arts Center): “Named one of the greatest string quartets of the last 100 years by BBC Music Magazine, the two-time GRAMMY-nominated Dover Quartet is one of the world’s most in-demand chamber ensembles.” Students can reserve their free tickets here.

Pizza, Puppies, and Ponies with the Police (Weds.)

Our University Police regularly hosts Pizza with the Police, but they have really upped their game this week. They are hosting Pizza, Puppies, and Ponies with the Police, (Weds. March 20, 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., Manchester Plaza.) “This month’s Pizza with the Police will be accompanied by the Triad, NC chapter of Love on a Leash, whose mission is to train and empower therapy canines to offer stress-relief and happiness to any person who may be in need. We will also have ponies and trainers from Riverwood Therapeutic Riding Center.”

Women Owned Business Market (Weds.)

We are excited to invite your students to join us on Wednesday, March 20th for the first Women Owned Business Market, hosted by the Women’s Center and the School of Business.  The market will be held from 4:00-7:00 p.m. in the Founders Living Room of Farrell Hall, featuring a variety of local area vendors from the arts to wellness. There will be vendors with free food samples while supplies last. You’ll also be able to purchase goods and learn more about services from others.

Mathematical Business students get a shout out

I saw this from one of my colleagues who works with news stories and thought I would share:

“As part of the mathematical business major’s capstone course, seniors work with real clients to help solve a data or business problem. A group of Wake Forest students received national attention for their class research project on a recent Disney Dish podcast. ‘I love seeing our students’ work have impact outside the classroom,’ said statistical sciences professor Lucy D’Agostino McGowan, who co-teaches the class with business professor Chris Smith.”

Deacon Doulas

Do you have a student interested in healthcare and birthing? This might be something for them to consider:

Deacon Doulas is a volunteer doula program at the Wake Forest Baptist Health Birth Center that aims to provide labor support for uninsured, Medicaid-insured, and adolescent patients.

We hold bi-annual trainings to teach people who are interested in how to be a volunteer doula. After the training, volunteers sign up to be on-call for 12-hour shifts (8am-8pm or 8pm-8am). When you are on-call, you are not expected to be at the hospital if there is not a laboring patient requesting a doula. Volunteers are required to sign up for two on-call shifts per month. This is a great way to get patient contact or volunteer hours especially if you’re interested in birth work or women’s health!”

Message about Storage Scholars

The Office of Residence Life and Housing sent this message about Storage Scholars. Key highlights:

“Storage Scholars provides a comprehensive solution that includes:

  • Supplying all necessary packing materials right before your exams.
  • Allowing you to lock up your belongings safely in your room before heading home.
  • Secure, local, temperature-controlled storage for your items.
  • The option to ship your boxes anywhere within the country.

Upon your return, rest assured that your belongings will be waiting for you in your new room, ready for the new semester.”

Wake the #1 seed in the NIT

While Wake didn’t make the Big Dance this year, we did get selected as the #1 seed in the NIT and we will host App State on Wednesday; read more. It will air on ESPN+ and I hope you will join me in watching our Deacs!

Ramadan

Ramadan began while I was out on Spring Break. Wishing a Ramadan Mubarak to all who are observing.
