Its almost the end of the week, and happily we have a sunny day today after a couple of days of cold rain. I’ll take mostly sunny and high 70s/low 80s for every weekend, please and thank you.

Walk with Wente: Meet Jennifer Greiman, Professor of English

At Wake Forest, we celebrate faculty who are both outstanding teachers and brilliant scholars. To celebrate our community of inquiry, President Wente invites faculty members to share their contributions and insights with the Wake Forest community by joining her on a “Walk with Wente.”

In the most recent episode, she walks and talks with Jennifer Greiman, Professor of English, about how 18th- and 19th-century American literature can inform our approach to today’s issues, especially around democracy. They describe the impact of Wake Forest’s Humanities Institute on interdisciplinary scholarship and how liberal arts classes build upon each other. Greiman discusses how she encourages students to step outside the things they know and then what she learns from them when they do.

Update on Senior Bell Tower Tours

I asked my colleague who works with the senior class bell tower tours for an update on the process and was told this:

“Seniors who have made a gift to the 1834 Student Campaign by midnight tonight will be emailed tomorrow morning with an invitation to register for tours of the bell tower in Wait Chapel on April 15, 16, 23, and 24 between noon-3:45 p.m. Spaces are limited, so make your gift now, then act quickly tomorrow to secure your tour spot.”

So if this is important to your ’24, they still have a few hours to take action.

Upcoming events

There are a number of things coming up in the next couple weeks that might be of interest to your students (or at least to be aware of, in the case of the Black Hawks landing):

  • Holi Celebration: Saturday, March 30, 12-4 p.m., Manchester Plaza. Please join the Hindu Students Association for our annual Holi celebration! We will have food, performances, and music, along with playing Holi!
  • Army helicopters to land on Poteat Field April 4 as part of ROTC training exercise: On Thursday, April 4, UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters will land on Poteat Field as part of an ROTC training exercise. The aircraft are scheduled to land around 3:15 p.m. and will transport cadets to Camp Butner Training Center for a joint field training exercise with ROTC programs from North Carolina A&T and Appalachian State.
  • Wakeville Arts Festival 2024: Saturday, April 6, 12-6 p.m., Scales and Davis Field. Last year there were over 700 attendees, 100 different artists, and 12 artistic fields represented. We’re especially in need of visual artists who would like to display their art. Free food trucks and live music!
  • Earth Month events: Join the Office of Sustainability and our campus partners in celebrating Earth Day and highlighting Wake Forest’s sustainability strides through engaging events, experiences, and a renewed sense of community along the way.

Your students can find other events that interest them at The Link.

Finally, for students interested in a quintessentially Winston-Salem experience, every Easter Sunday (for the past 251 years!) there is a Sunrise Service in Old Salem downtown. If you have a very early riser who will be celebrating Easter, they should consider going to this at least once during their time in Winston.
