  • Milestone reached in Baity Street redevelopment efforts

It started out grey and rainy today, and as I write this now, it’s just grey but threatening to rain at any moment. It’s been so warm here – we never really had a true winter deep freeze – that flowers are blooming earlier, which is nice to see. It should look even better after your Deacs return from Spring Break.

Here are a few things that you might want to know as we arrive at midweek.

Information for P’28s (i.e., parents and families of the incoming Class of 2028)

This morning, we sent out an email to our P’28s: parents and families of the Class of 2028 who will begin with us in August. If you are a P’28, you can read that message here.

There will no doubt be some P’28s here in the Daily Deacdom who might be asking themselves “I did not get that email. Why not?” If you are certain that you have already verified your information in Wake Network (so you get in our email system) but did not get the email, you can do one or more of the following:

  • Check your spam filter/junk/quarantine folder for any @wfu.edu emails, because from time to time people’s Internet Service Providers interpret our emails as spam.
  • Do an inbox search on any @wfu.edu emails because you may find it that way.
  • If you had provided Wake Forest with your work email, it might be worth talking to your IT department about whether they can tweak your settings so our emails can get past your firewall. If this is a home email, you can talk to your ISP about your firewall.

Unfortunately, when we press ‘send’ on an email, there is no way to guarantee how that email will be received and interpreted by individual firewalls or spam filters. But we do archive the emails we send families in our Family News website, so you can always access them.

Encourage your students to take the anonymous AI survey

Students were invited to participate in a research study to help us better understand student views of artificial intelligence. They can take the survey at go.wfu.edu/aitake. The survey will not record their identity or any personal identifiers, so the responses the study collects will be completely anonymous. If your student completes the survey, they could win a WFU swag basket.

Longtime readers know I am a total nerd for a survey, particularly because I know from my own doctoral work how hard it is to reach the threshold of participants you need to get valid results. So if you talk to your Deac, please urge them to check their email or take it at go.wfu.edu/aitake. You’ll be doing us a solid by getting your Deacs to help us understand how students think about AI.

Milestone reached in Baity Street redevelopment efforts

In case you missed it, there are plans to redevelop the Baity Street area over by the LJVM Coliseum and Truist Field. This week, the City Council approved a plan to receive $35 million in state infrastructure funding:

“The redevelopment effort will reinforce Winston-Salem’s position as a tourism, sports and entertainment destination. Carter and Front Street Capital, the development team for the project, will implement these funds as part of the first phase of the redevelopment….

Wake Forest University, the City of Winston Salem and Carter/Front Street Capital are collaborating to develop a transformative vision for a lively mixed-use development in an area of the city that draws more than 750,000 visitors per year. The team is evaluating the addition of new retail, restaurant, experiential and residential uses that will benefit residents, students and visitors alike.” Read more.
