Today is Mardi Gras, or Fat Tuesday. My Louisiana-born husband is the official procurer of King Cake in our house. I hope wherever you are, you might be able to get some King Cake too, and enjoy some revelry (especially for any who might be participating in Lent starting tomorrow).

Today is also a meeting-heavy day for me, so let’s get right to all the Fat Tuesday news that’s fit to print (or blog!)

Deacon Dialogues

I wanted to highlight a terrific opportunity for your students to engage in compelling discussions. They can sign up for one of our upcoming Deacon Dialogues:

“Join us for meaningful conversation with Deacon Dialogues. Deacon Dialogue: Let’s Talk is a new initiative for Wake Forest students through the Office of Civic & Community Engagement. Through each unique topic, we’ll focus on broadening our perspective, exchanging ideas, and using conversations as a catalyst for change.

Dinner will be provided to all participants in attendance at each Deacon Dialogue.”

Your Deacs can learn more about the Dialogues and sign up here.

Ash Wednesday service

For students who wish to participate in Ash Wednesday, there is an event tomorrow on the Quad from 11:45-12:15:

“Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the season of Lent, a 40-day journey of introspection and repentance in the Christian tradition that originated as a mirroring fast of the 40 days Jesus fasted in the desert. Participants accept ashes as a reminder of their mortality and an invitation into a period of reflection, prayer, and fasting.

This simple service of ‘Ashes on the Quad’ will include singing and the receiving of ashes on a rolling basis. All members of the Wake Forest University community are invited to participate. It will run Wednesday, February 14 from 11:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.”

Tests of emergency systems

Tests of Wake Forest emergency alert systems will be conducted Feb. 27 and 29. System tests will occur on both days between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. The tests are being conducted to ensure that the University’s emergency notification systems are operating properly. Read more.

Summer Study Abroad opportunities

If your Deac is considering study abroad, summer can be an amazing time to do it. My friends in our Global Programs and Studies office have compiled this list of summer 2024 opportunities that still have openings.

March 1st is the program application deadline and Feb. 15th is our summer study abroad scholarship application deadline.

President’s Ball

Let’s Have a Ball! Students are encouraged to mark their calendars for one of Wake Forest’s favorite traditions: the biennial President’s Ball, which will be held on Friday, Apr. 12, at the Joel Coliseum. This event is open to all undergraduate and graduate students.

Students will get more information (including a link to registration) closer to the date of the ball. For now, we hope they will mark their calendars, and if they are coming home for spring break and want to bring back some of their finery, they can (while there is not a formal dress code, many choose to come in cocktail party attire or business casual).
