Lam Museum exhibit commemorates the Holocaust; related events

The Lam Museum is hosting a traveling exhibit from Kennesaw State University entitled “Words, Music, Memory: Re(presenting) Voices of the Holocaust” through March 2. This 10-panel exhibit and accompanying digital gallery guide highlight the links along the chain of commemoration that connect the past and the present and generation to generation. Two events this weekend:

Lunar New Year

The Chaplain’s office does a great job helping the rest of the campus learn more about religious holy day observances. We have a big one coming up this weekend for some of our families – Lunar New Year:

“One of the most important festivals celebrated in Asian cultures. In the West, Lunar New Year is often referred to as Chinese New Year. During this 15-day festival, family and friends travel across the nation to reunite over great food such as dumplings. People decorate houses with red lanterns, Spring couplets, and paper-cut outs. Young people love setting off firecrackers and receiving cash in paper (or electronic nowadays) red envelopes.”

For all our students – and their families – about to celebrate the Lunar New Year starting on Saturday, Feb. 10, we wish you a gung hay fat choi! May the Year of the Dragon bring you and your family good health, wealth, and happiness!

Sustainability Keynote Lecture

We hope your students will Join award-winning author and science writer David Quammen for Tracing Threads from Art to Science, from Ebola to the Serengeti Lion on Tuesday, Feb. 13 at 5:30 p.m. In his keynote lecture, Quammen will trace the interconnected relationships between landscapes and public health through his career as a novelist-turned science writer.

Face to Face event with Liz Cheney and Jon Meacham

Face to Face is excited to welcome Former U.S. Representative Liz Cheney and Presidential Historian and Pulitzer Prize-Winning Author, Jon Meacham on February 22. Due to unprecedented demand, the evening event has sold out. Students are encouraged to attend the student-led event. Students will be required to present their student ID to gain admittance. Doors to Wait Chapel open at 3:30 p.m. and the student-led event begins at 5 p.m. A clear bag policy will be in place for this event.

Student Voting in NC Primaries

The North Carolina Primaries will take place on March 5, with One-Stop Early Voting occurring from Thursday, Feb. 15-Saturday, March 2. During this election, voters choose which candidates should be the party nominees to appear on the general election ballot.

Voters can cast their ballot in one of 3 ways:

  • One-Stop Early Voting in North Carolina allows voters to register and vote all at once at any early voting location in their county. The closest location for Wake Forest students is the Polo Park Community Center at 1850 Polo Road, Winston-Salem.
  • Students interested in Voting In-Person on Election Day (March 5), will need to have already completed their voter registration. The deadline was Friday, February 9. If your student did not register to vote and is interested in casting their ballot in North Carolina, they’ll need to participate in One-Stop Early Voting.
  • Students who are NC residents, and already registered to vote, have the option to vote absentee. The deadline to request an absentee ballot for NC residents is February 27 at 5:00 p.m. Request a NC Absentee Ballot.
  • Important Tips for Voters
    • Don’t forget a photo ID: North Carolina voters will be asked to show photo ID when they check in to vote. If your student is not a North Carolina resident, their DeaconOne Card will be accepted.
    • Your student can find their designated polling location on their Voter Registration Card or online through the Forsyth County Board of Elections.
      • If they will be voting on Election Day, please be mindful that the Reynolda Campus is divided into two districts; please have them check their assigned polling location to vote in person at the correct site on Election Day.
