It’s a new – and thankfully much warmer – week. We are projected to hit 69 degrees on Friday after a very frigid weekend. Our female students who went through sorority recruitment had Bid Day yesterday, and male fraternity Bid Day is coming up on the 24th. Some of our students will land where they hoped to, and others will not.

In the event that your Deac doesn’t have the recruitment experience they hoped for, my best advice is threefold: 1) remind them that they are enough just as they are, 2) remind them that ‘this too shall pass’ and it won’t always feel like it does at this moment, and 3) encourage them to dive in to other campus organizations with gusto. Our Spring Involvement Fair is coming up on Feb. 1st and students can find lots of organizations to join to provide them with friends, a social network, and meaningful activity.

FDOC Fit Check

Think back to your school days, Daily Deacdom. Were you the kind of person who carefully curated your first-day-of-school outfit? Some of my intrepid colleagues roamed campus on FDOC last week and did a FDOC Fit [Outfit] Check video. You can check it out here.

Wake Washington Housing Available in Summer 2024

I got some great news from our Wake Washington Center this morning that may be of interest to families:

“Once again, Wake Washington will be opening its apartments to any continuously enrolled Wake Forest student — undergraduate, graduate, law, business, etc. — who will be interning in Washington, DC this summer. The application is now open, and students may visit our website for more information and to apply. Review of applications will begin in February and continue on a rolling basis until all available beds are filled.”

I am told the beds filled very quickly last summer, so if your Deac knows they already have an internship in DC, get them to act fast.

Belonging and Inclusion Campus Evaluation survey launched today

The Belonging and Inclusion Campus Evaluation survey launched today (January 22) and it will run until February 10. This survey is an opportunity for students (as well as faculty, staff, and administrators) to describe their personal experiences and observations, and to offer suggestions for change that might enhance the sense of belonging at Wake Forest.

Please encourage your students to check their email and take this important survey. We want and need all voices! See President Wente’s video about this critical initiative.

Letters So Dear for our ’27s

Since it’s Monday, our ’27s and spring transfer students received their issue of Letters So Dear. The letter is a longish one but it is packed with good ideas. I especially like the fact that our letter writer, senior Zach Bokhari, stresses the importance of making the choices that are right for you (even if contrary to what others are doing):

“Rule number one is that you are not the same as your friends and your friends are not the same as you. If you know that you can only study alone (like me), even if professors recommend group study, then you do you.”

There can be many pressures for students to do things that might go against their best instincts, and at 18 years of age, it can be hard to resist pressure from others. To the degree that you can buoy your ’27s’ sense of holding true to what they feel is right for them, the better off they will be.

Reminder: new commercial tonight

Just a reminder not to leave your couch during the Wake-UNC men’s basketball game tonight. We are airing Wake’s new commercial. And like us, it will be…distinct 🙂
