Lots of news to get to, and I will start by sharing a new statement on the Outreach website on the Israel-Palestine crisis:

“This past weekend we learned about a social media post made by a Wake Forest faculty member on a personal X account (formerly Twitter). The posted comments caused significant anxiety and fear for members of our community. We take such matters very seriously. We do not condone or support the views expressed in these posts. As a matter of principle, we affirm the right to individual freedom of expression. And, to be clear: statements that diminish the value and dignity of human life or condone the use of violence are counter to the values inherent in the Pro Humanitate ethos of Wake Forest University.”

You can read the full statement addressing social media posts here

I do not have any additional information beyond what is on the Outreach website, but the University would update the Outreach website if/as needed.

RA applications are open for 2024-25

Residence Life and Housing sent a message to resident students announcing that Resident Adviser (RA) applications for the 2024-2025 academic year are now open. Select highlights from the student message:

  • “As a resident adviser, you’ll gain access to professional development, academic support, and a network of other student leaders and campus leadership. The work you would do matters and we want to invest in you in tangible ways too. RAs receive a ten-month $5700 stipend and a single room at a discounted rate!”
  • “If you’d like to learn more about the expectations and advantages of becoming a Wake Forest University Resident Adviser visit go.wfu.edu/ra.

Interested students can apply on the Housing Portal. For those students who are looking for a single room, some spending money, and work experience that might help on a resume, the RA position is a great way to gain all three of these in one fell swoop.

Wake Forest University career offices win Career Spark Award

Congratulations to the Wake Forest University career offices on their Career Spark Award for 2023. This award reflects the strong investment our team has made in student engagement. The Career Spark Awards recognize the top career centers on Handshake and are only given to a handful of institutions nationwide.

We did have a test of emergency systems today

This email went out earlier today, and I also received it via the Wake Safe app on my phone. As a reminder, campus safety alerts now go out through Wake Safe, not email, to families. If you have not signed up for Wake Safe alerts, instructions are available here.

Winston-Salem is apparently the second cheapest city to own and maintain a car

I saw this tidbit in the WStoday e-newsletter:

“No. 2. That’s where Winston-Salem falls on WalletHub’s ranking of the 100 cheapest cities to own and maintain a car. The study considered 30 factors — including average gas prices, monthly insurance premiums, maintenance, and parking costs. The city was also ranked the No. 11 overall best place to drive(Triad Business Journal).”

If you want to see local Winston-Salem news and trivia like this, you can subscribe to WStoday here.

My beloved child called me from NC State yesterday raving about how good the weather is. And he’s not wrong. While Raleigh is about 90 miles to the east of Winston-Salem, the weather is similar. And it feels like fall right now. It’s cold in the morning – like upper 40s/low 50s – and you definitely need a jacket early in the day. The trees in my neighborhood are turning beautiful colors, as are the trees on campus. Perhaps fall is finally here to stay.
