  • Spring-only housing webinar (Oct. 26)
  • Secrest Artists Series: Dublin Guitar Quartet (Oct. 26)
  • Upcoming Halloween fun

Happy Project Pumpkin to all! Hopefully by the time this hits your inbox, you might be able to catch a glimpse of the revelry on the Quad via the Quad Cam (and if not, I hope your Deacs send you some pictures or FaceTime you). It’s always such a fun day and I love to see the creativity in students’ costumes.

Spring-only housing webinar (Oct. 26)

This item will be especially useful to families with students abroad this fall:

“Join the Office of Residence Life and Housing on Thursday, October 26 at 11 a.m. EST.  for a webinar on Spring-Only Housing Processes! You can use this link to join. We’ll walk you through the spring processes, including Spring-Only Housing Selection, and answer whatever questions you may have in preparation for selection.  Can’t wait to see you there!” Read more.

I know that some students currently abroad could feel a sense of trepidation at the idea of having to room in the spring with a student they did not already know. If your Deac is in that camp, remind them that they have spent the fall semester in a foreign country and they had to adjust to all kinds of new things (new food, different currency, public transportation, maybe a foreign language, etc.) and they were able to do that. Having gained all kinds of new skills and flexibility that comes with travel, living with another Wake student should be a pretty easy thing to do.

Secrest Artists Series: Dublin Guitar Quartet

A reminder to encourage your students to take advantage of our free (to them) Secrest Artists Series: this Thursday we have the Dublin Guitar Quartet at 7:30 p.m. in Brendle Recital Hall, Scales Fine Arts Center:

“The Dublin Guitar Quartet has dedicated its career to performing contemporary music, which makes the ensemble unique within its genre. With the help of eight- and 11-string guitars, the quartet has created a catalog of original works and arrangements by composers such Philip Glass, Steve Reich, Arvo Pärt and György Ligeti.”

I keep saying that there will come a time when students have to pay their own cash money to see world class concerts, so enjoy all the free ones they can get as students!

Upcoming Halloween fun

There are a couple of opportunities for Halloween fun coming up for our Deacs:

The ZSR Library will host a Halloween game night and costume contest this Friday from 7-9 p.m.: “Join the ZSR Library for an evening of fun with board games, card games, tabletop games, video games, tarot card readings, a costume contest, Halloween tricks and treats, and more!”

On Sunday, Oct. 29 at 4 p.m., your Deacs can paint pumpkins in the Campus Garden: “Come paint your own, mini pumpkin just in time for Halloween! This event will be taking place during our normal Sunday volunteer hours, from 4-6 pm, and is co-hosted with WakerSpace. Registration is not required, but encouraged to determine supplies.”

On Monday, Oct. 30th is our Haunted Tunnels: “You are invited to walk through the haunted tunnels that run underneath Luter and Babcock Residence Halls. Haunted Tunnels is a Wake Forest tradition that brings our community together for a night of fright. This haunted house event will take place on October 30, 2023 from 6-10 pm. We will let in groups of 5 people at one time, so bring your friends! Enter at your own risk…”

On Tuesday, Oct. 31st from 3-5 p.m. is Halloween Trick or Treating in the Benson Center: “Join us on Halloween to trick-or-treat around Benson!  Pick up your bag and a list of spots to stop for candy at the Information Desk on the 3rd floor.  Open to all students.”

There are other events going on besides these – and your Deacs should be regularly consulting The Link to find events and activities of interest.
