It’s the first day back from Spring Break for our students. Post-vacation is always a rough reentry, but yesterday’s weather was a real slap in the face: just a couple of degrees above freezing and rainy for much of the day.

When I woke up yesterday, there was snow and slush all over my deck and my garden beds. The weather this week looks like it will be all over the place: lowest overnight temp will be 29 but highest day temp will be 64?!?! That is March in NC. You just never know.

5 day forecast

Let’s talk about a few things happening this week and next:

Pizza with the Police this Thursday 3/16 – new evening hours!

I got a message today from my friends in University Police that they are hosting their semi-regular event, Pizza with the Police, on a new day and time: Thursday (3/16) from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at Zicks.

Pizza with the Police gives your Deacs a chance to grab a slice of pizza and get to know some of the professional staff who help keep our campus safe. It’s a great opportunity to learn more about campus safety – and the people behind that effort – all while enjoying some great food. Hope your Deacs will go!

Last day to withdraw from a full-term course is Friday 3/17

For any undergraduates wishing to drop a full-term course with a grade of W (Course Withdrawal), the deadline is March 17. A grade of W does not have any impact on your student’s GPA. It simply shows on their transcript that they had been enrolled in a class and withdrew from it after the last date to drop a class.

If your Deac wants to drop a class via Course Withdrawal, encourage them to review the Office of Academic Advising website ASAP for details. There are required conversations they must have and signatures they need to get in order to withdraw from a course, and those processes can take time. So students in this situation should begin work now and allow adequate time to get all the necessary approvals before the deadline.

Housing selection 3/20-23

Housing selection is coming up March 20-23. The Office of Residence Life and Housing sent this message about housing selection times for current students (i.e., ’23-’26).

I can’t emphasize enough the importance of students having a Plan A, B, C, and D, good communication with all members of a roommate group and honoring agreements you’d made, and using the help resources from the Office of Residence Life and Housing. Your Deacs can visit go.wfu.edu/housingselection to find detailed instructions, tools, resources, and reminders. You can watch our webinar here.

Last call for entries in the hotel/restaurant recommendations survey

We have been working hard on updates to the New Students website, which will go live for our ’27s and P’27s around May 1st. One of the enhancements to this year’s site is we want to offer some peer-vetted suggestions for hotels and restaurants, so I am putting out a last call for y’all to add your thoughts via the survey so that we can share your recommendations with the P’27s. Thank you in advance for helping me!

Safety advisory about cars

A message went out to campus this morning about vehicle safety issues affecting college campuses in Winston-Salem. In January and February, various issues related to vehicles (break-ins, thefts and vandalism) were reported at Wake Forest. Other area universities have also reported increases in these kinds of incidents.

If your Deac has a car on campus/in an off-campus neighborhood or apartment complex, please be sure they are aware of the recommendation to lock their cars, be sure there are no valuables in the car, etc. See the message for full details.

Don’t be surprised if, even though they just had a week off, your Deacs seem tired this week. Getting back into the groove of school, particularly after a long break, is taxing. They’ll soon be back into their regular routine.
